AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal addresses youth at Jantar Mantar after extending support to Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike

NEW DELHI: July, 2026 : Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday backed scientist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike at Jantar Mantar and demanded that he be appointed India’s Education Minister in place of Dharmendra Pradhan. Extending support to Sonam Wangchuk’s campaign for transparency in the examination system and accountability in education, the AAP Supremo argued that India’s rotten education system can only be repaired through revolutionary leadership and revolutionary reforms.

The AAP Chief asserted the Prime Minister would never appoint Sonam Wangchuk because he fears the revolutionary changes he could bring to education. Several senior AAP leaders, including Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, were also present.

Addressing the protest at Jantar Mantar, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal stated, “I salute all the young people who have gathered under the banner of the CJP protest to reform our country’s education system and examination system. I salute Sonam Wangchuk, who is not fighting for himself but for all of you, for the youth and for the children of our country. He has put his life on the line and has been on a hunger strike for the last 19 days. Today is the 19th day of his fast.”

Highlighting the courage of those who spoke out against examination irregularities, the AAP Supremo added, “There are many teachers in our country who raised their voices when examinations were leaked and corruption was involved. They raised their voices from their respective cities, but they were arrested, tortured in different ways and FIRs were filed against them. I salute all of them.”

Praising Sonam Wangchuk’s contribution, Arvind Kejriwal asserted, “Sonam Wangchuk is a great educationist. He has made many sacrifices for Ladakh and for the country in the past as well. Today, I salute him for the way he has put his life on the line for the nation.”

Explaining the emotional significance of competitive examinations, the AAP Chief said, “Whenever a child appears for a competitive examination, it is not just an examination. It is a dream. When that child enters the examination hall, there is a belief that through hard work and intelligence, they will build their future.”

Recalling his own experience, Arvind Kejriwal continued, “I also appeared for the IIT examination. I succeeded and went to IIT. But in those days, papers were not being leaked. I was thinking that if papers had been leaked back then, perhaps I would never have developed the confidence to even appear for the IIT examination. Both my children studied at IIT, and even during their time, examination leaks were not a thing. But over the last few years, the way paper leaks have become common, the confidence of a child that hard work and intelligence can help them succeed and prosper has started to weaken. This is not right. It is extremely dangerous for the country.”

Referring to repeated examination leaks, he remarked, “The NEET paper was leaked. What did the government do? Papers are being leaked every year. The mastermind behind the 2024 paper leak was granted bail. This has now become a system. Every year papers are leaked, committees are formed, investigations are conducted, FIRs are registered, arrests are made, bail is granted, and preparations begin for the next year’s paper leak.”

Questioning the government’s response, the AAP Supremo stated, “How long will the youth of this country tolerate this? How long will students tolerate it? After the NEET paper leak, more than 20 children died by suicide. Yet they learnt nothing. No matter how many children die by suicide, it makes no difference to them. Those children belonged to our families, to our homes, but they did nothing.”

Highlighting further failures in the education system, the former Delhi CM asserted, “The entire CBSE evaluation system collapsed. They did not even file an FIR against the company responsible, let alone arrest anyone. Such a massive movement is taking place across the country, yet they have still not changed the system to ensure that papers are not leaked next year. Next year papers will be leaked again. Next year students will die again. Next year our children will again die by suicide. When will this system change? This system has to be changed.”

Recalling the anti corruption movement, Arvind Kejriwal said, “As I was coming here today, I was thinking about this very place, Jantar Mantar. It was 4 April 2011. Anna Hazare was sitting here. The government of that time was also full of arrogance. Three years later, that government did not survive. It collapsed because of its arrogance. Today it is 2026. I want to tell them to listen to the voice of the youth, listen to the ‘Cockroach Andolan’ and listen to Sonam Wangchuk. Otherwise, three years from now, your fate will be the same as theirs was in 2014. They too are drowned in arrogance. They have learnt nothing and continue to remain consumed by arrogance.”

Making a proposal to the gathering, the AAP Chief stated, “Dharmendra Pradhan must resign. Instead, Sonam Wangchuk should be made the Education Minister of the country. I want to tell the Prime Minister to remove Dharmendra Pradhan and appoint Sonam Wangchuk as the Education Minister of the country.”

Questioning the government’s reluctance, he remarked, “I know the Prime Minister is not going to listen. Why will he not do it? Because he is afraid that Sonam Wangchuk might bring about revolutionary changes. But when the education system has deteriorated to such an extent, we need revolutionary steps. Without a revolution, the education system cannot be fixed. We need a revolutionary Education Minister like Sonam Wangchuk and we also need his revolutionary reforms.”

Appealing for public participation, Arvind Kejriwal concluded, “On the 20th, I appeal to everyone across the country, to come here in the largest possible numbers. We must make the march to Parliament on the 20th a success”

Meanwhile, senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh invoked Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar’s famous lines, “Samar shesh hai, nahin paap ka bhaagi keval vyadh, jo tatasth hain samay likhega unka bhi apradh,” and appealed to people sitting at home to come out and reach Jantar Mantar. He urged people to raise their voices alongside Sonam Wangchuk and compel the Government of India and Narendra Modi to bow before the demands of the movement.

Sanjay Singh further said, “You will not find a bigger drama artist than PM Modi anywhere in the world. When the country was hit by COVID and people died during demonetisation, he started crying. The Prime Minister of the country spends day and night telling lies. I assure you that from 20 July onwards, we will speak to all our fellow MPs inside Parliament and fight for the youth. On 20 July, responding to Sonam Wangchuk’s call, I too will come to Jantar Mantar as a worker and a fellow participant to join this movement, and our other colleagues will also be there.”

He added, “Arvind Kejriwal has assured us that we will support this movement in every possible way. We also appeal to other political parties and people’s movements to extend their support, because Sonam Wangchuk is not fighting a personal battle. He is fighting for crores of young people across the country, for the future of India and for the generations to come.”

Arvind Kejriwal Urges People to Join 20 July March to Parliament

At the Jantar Mantar, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday extended his support to educationist Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, drawing an enthusiastic response from the large gathering of students, teachers, youth groups and supporters. Slogans of “Jai Samvidhan” repeatedly echoed across the protest site as the crowd strongly backed Arvind Kejriwal’s demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and wholeheartedly endorsed his proposal to appoint Sonam Wangchuk as India’s next Education Minister.

The gathering, held against the backdrop of repeated examination leaks and demands for transparency and accountability in the examination system, reflected growing public anger over the state of education and broad support for systemic reforms. Senior AAP leaders, including Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, also joined the protest and appealed to people across the country to turn up at Jantar Mantar in large numbers on 20 July and make the march to Parliament a success.
