Justice Nelson Sailo Visits Serchhip District Jail, Reviews Inmates’ Welfare and Legal Aid Services
Serchhip, July 2026: Justice Nelson Sailo, Judge of the Gauhati High Court and Executive Chairman of the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA), visited the Serchhip District Jail on Friday to review prison facilities, interact with inmates, and assess their welfare.
During the visit, Justice Sailo inspected the jail building and its infrastructure, interacted with prisoners to understand their concerns and grievances, and distributed essential items required by the inmates.
He was accompanied by MSLSA Member Secretary Vincent Lalrokima, Joint Secretary Thomas Lalrammawia, and district officials, including the Superintendent of Police (SP), Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM), District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary, SDO (Sadar), and the District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO).
Addressing the inmates, Justice Sailo stressed the importance of legal awareness and ensuring that every citizen understands their legal rights and constitutional entitlements. He said the Legal Services Authority remains committed to assisting individuals facing legal difficulties and encouraged those with legal issues to approach the authority for guidance and support whenever needed.
Later in the day, Justice Sailo also visited the Circuit Court and the Judicial Quarters in Serchhip. According to the schedule, he will visit the Legal Aid Clinic at Thenzawl Bazar Veng on Saturday.
The Legal Aid Clinic serves as a centre where citizens can obtain legal advice, seek assistance on legal matters, and access support whenever they face legal challenges. The clinics are staffed by Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs), who help people understand legal procedures and facilitate access to justice.
According to official records, Serchhip District Jail currently houses 93 inmates, comprising 83 male and 10 female prisoners.
The inmates include:
- NDPS Act cases: 16 male and 5 female inmates
- Theft cases: 36 male and 1 female inmate
- MLP Act cases: 14 male and 4 female inmates
- POCSO Act cases: 8 male inmates
- Attempt to Murder case: 1 male inmate
- Other offences: 8 inmates
The visit formed part of the Mizoram State Legal Services Authority’s ongoing efforts to strengthen legal awareness, improve access to justice, and ensure the welfare and rights of prisoners across the state.
