Road Safety Must Be the Highest Priority: Rajasthan Chief Secretary
Focus on Black Spot Rectification, Integrated Emergency Helplines, Trauma Care and Public Awareness
Jaipur, July 2026: Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas on Friday chaired a high-level review meeting on road safety across national highways and other roads in the state, directing all concerned departments to work in close coordination to significantly reduce road accidents and improve highway safety.
The follow-up meeting reviewed compliance with directions issued during three previous review meetings. During the session, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) presented a detailed report, including the audit of road accidents that had occurred on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, along with measures undertaken to prevent future accidents.
The Transport Department also made a comprehensive presentation highlighting the state’s intensive road safety campaign and various innovations introduced to reduce accidents.
Officials informed the meeting that during a special enforcement drive conducted between July 8 and July 28, the Transport Department issued 17,850 challans for various traffic violations, seized 487 vehicles, and suspended the registration certificates of 22 vehicles. In addition, between July 2 and July 14, the Police Department issued 271,494 challans against vehicles for various traffic offences.
Priority on Black Spot Rectification and Emergency Response
The Chief Secretary instructed all departments associated with road safety to adopt a coordinated approach to accident prevention. He directed officials to establish effective integration between the NHAI ambulance helpline (1033), the state’s 108 emergency ambulance service, and the 112 police emergency helpline to ensure prompt response during road accidents.
He also instructed authorities to identify and rectify accident-prone black spots on national highways at the earliest, ensure uninterrupted functioning of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS), undertake regular monitoring of highway safety, and implement corrective measures wherever required.
Further, Srinivas directed that medical and trauma care facilities at highway wayside amenities should be fully functional to provide immediate assistance to accident victims.
Greater Public Awareness and Strong Enforcement
Emphasising the importance of awareness, the Chief Secretary directed all departments to intensify Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaigns to educate the public on road safety.
He also called for seamless coordination among district administrations and all road safety agencies, while directing that District Road Safety Committee meetings be held regularly across the state.
Srinivas instructed officials to take strict action against fraudulent and irregular cases involving vehicles registered in other states. He also directed departments to ensure that highway signboards, speed limit indicators and hazard markings comply with prescribed standards, remove encroachments along highways, and prevent theft of highway infrastructure and equipment.
He stressed that all districts should make optimum use of funds allocated for road safety initiatives.
Monitoring Key to Reducing Accidents
Additional Chief Secretary, Public Works Department (PWD), Praveen Gupta said effective monitoring by all concerned departments is essential to reduce road accidents. He assured that the state government would provide all necessary administrative and financial support for safety-related works identified by NHAI.
Principal Secretary, Transport Department and Chairman, Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC), Bhawani Singh Detha, emphasised the effective implementation of all government road safety schemes. He called for stronger inter-departmental coordination, wider consultations with stakeholders and the preparation of practical, result-oriented action plans to curb road accidents.
The meeting also reviewed enforcement measures undertaken by the Police and Transport Departments, including vehicle seizures, traffic challans and other regulatory actions.
NHAI Highlights Safety Measures
Participating through video conferencing, NHAI Chairman Santosh Yadav briefed the meeting on various initiatives being undertaken to reduce accidents on national highways. He elaborated on road engineering improvements, treatment of accident-prone black spots, emergency response systems and several other highway safety measures.
Officials from various departments also shared suggestions and unanimously agreed to strengthen coordinated efforts to make Rajasthan’s highways safer.
The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Bhaskar A. Sawant, Additional Chief Secretary (Urban Development and Housing) Alok Gupta, Director General (Traffic) Malini Agrawal, Secretary, Local Self Government Department Ravi Jain, Secretary, Labour Department Purna Chandra Kishan, senior officials from all concerned departments, while all District Collectors and Superintendents of Police participated through video conferencing.
