Shashi Tharoor Hails Gen Z After Education Minister’s Resignation, Calls It a Triumph of Democratic Accountability

New Delhi, July 2026 : Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Saturday praised India’s Gen Z for playing a pivotal role in securing the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, describing the development as a significant victory for democratic participation after weeks of nationwide student protests over alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks.

In a video message shared on his official X account, Tharoor addressed “young Indians and those young at heart,” saying the resignation marked an important milestone in India’s democratic journey and demonstrated that peaceful, sustained public movements could compel governments to respond to citizens’ concerns.

“This is an important moment because it reminds us of something fundamental about democracy,” Tharoor said. “When citizens raise their voices peacefully and persistently, governments cannot remain indifferent.”

He stressed that the development was not merely about the resignation of one minister but about the emergence of an entire generation determined to demand accountability and transparency.

“It is about a whole generation of young Indians—Gen Z. I am so proud of you,” Tharoor remarked.

The Congress leader commended students for transforming their frustration into constructive action rather than giving in to despair. He said young people had demonstrated courage, creativity and conviction by refusing to remain silent on issues that directly affected their future.

“You took your frustration and turned it into action. You took your anger and channelled it with courage, creativity and conviction. You reminded the country that democracy belongs not only to those who govern but also to those who hold governments accountable,” he said.

Encouraging students to remain engaged in public life, Tharoor urged them to continue asking difficult questions, challenging hypocrisy and participating actively in democratic processes.

“Keep making your voices heard. Keep asking uncomfortable questions. Keep calling out hypocrisy. But above all, keep showing up,” he said.

At the same time, Tharoor cautioned that the resignation alone could not resolve the larger issues surrounding India’s examination system. He noted that millions of students had experienced anxiety, uncertainty and hardship due to repeated allegations of paper leaks and irregularities.

He said restoring public confidence would require transparent investigations, fixing accountability for those responsible and implementing structural reforms to ensure that similar controversies do not recur.

“One resignation cannot by itself restore faith in our examination system. That requires transparent investigations, accountability and reforms so that no student has to go through this again,” he said.

In a separate post on X, Tharoor described the resignation as an acknowledgment that democratic accountability cannot be avoided indefinitely. He said it followed weeks of determined and peaceful protests by students, parents and citizens who refused to let their concerns be ignored.

He also expressed concern over reports of police action against protesters, stating that the use of force against citizens exercising their democratic right to peaceful protest should concern every Indian, irrespective of political affiliation.

Meanwhile, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which had spearheaded the student movement, announced the withdrawal of its protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar after the Centre accepted its principal demands following a third round of discussions. Organisers described the outcome as the beginning of a broader process of education reforms and greater accountability in the examination system.
