Russia Claims Su-57 Scores First Air-to-Air Kill in Ukraine Conflict Using Advanced RVV-SDM Missile

Moscow/Kyiv, Aug 2026 : Russia has claimed that its fifth-generation Su-57 stealth fighter has recorded its first air-to-air kill in the Ukraine conflict, with Moscow saying the aircraft used the advanced RVV-SDM guided missile during combat operations.

The claim was made by Alexander Mikheev, Director General of Russia’s state-owned arms exporter Rosoboronexport. He said the Su-57 had demonstrated its capabilities in real combat conditions by engaging multiple targets in the air and on the ground while operating against sophisticated air-defence and electronic warfare systems.

According to Russia’s state-run TASS news agency, Mikheev said global interest in the export version of the aircraft, the Su-57E, has increased following its reported battlefield performance. He claimed the aircraft had demonstrated its effectiveness across different combat missions and against advanced enemy defence and electronic warfare capabilities.

RVV-SDM missile at the centre of claim

Russia says the Su-57 has employed a range of its air-to-air weapons, including the latest RVV-SDM medium-range guided missile. The weapon has reportedly been developed by Rosoboronexport and is intended for integration with the export variant of the Su-57E stealth fighter.

The missile is described as having fire-and-forget capability, along with active and passive radar guidance. Its design is also intended to improve its resistance to electronic warfare and jamming, allowing it to engage targets in complex electromagnetic environments.

Former Indian Air Force pilot and defence analyst Vijender K. Thakur, speaking to The Eurasian Times, described the RVV-SDM as a medium-range missile and suggested that it could be a modified version of the RVV-SD specifically adapted for launch from the Su-57.

According to the claims cited in the report, the missile can engage targets travelling at speeds of up to Mach 3 and can reportedly target aircraft operating from an altitude of around 15 metres to as high as 25 kilometres.

The weapon is also said to have been designed to operate against aircraft, drones and cruise missiles in environments characterised by intense electronic warfare and jamming. Its integration inside the Su-57E’s internal weapons bay is particularly significant because it allows the fighter to carry the missile while maintaining its low-observable characteristics.

Earlier claim involving Swedish AEW&C aircraft

The latest Russian claim follows earlier reports from Russian media outlets and Telegram channels in May 2026 alleging that a Su-57 had used the long-range R-37M air-to-air missile to shoot down a Swedish-made Saab 340 AEW&C aircraft operated by Ukraine over eastern Ukraine.

However, such battlefield claims can be difficult to independently verify, and details surrounding individual engagements remain contested.

The reported use of the Su-57 in the conflict is nevertheless being closely watched because Russia has promoted the aircraft as the centrepiece of its fifth-generation fighter programme.

Russia continues to upgrade Su-57

Moscow has also continued efforts to increase the aircraft’s combat capabilities. In February, Russia’s Rostec press service announced that the Russian Aerospace Forces had received a new batch of Su-57 fighters featuring upgraded systems and additional weapons.

The upgraded aircraft reportedly incorporates improvements to its onboard equipment and weapons package, aimed at increasing its effectiveness in modern combat environments.

Russia is also developing a new engine for the fighter. Tests involving the Izdeliye 177 engine were reportedly conducted with the Su-57 in December 2025. According to a Rostec official cited in the report, the engine can generate up to 16,000 kg of thrust with afterburner.

The new powerplant is expected to reduce fuel consumption and provide greater durability compared with the earlier Saturn AL-41F1 afterburning turbofan engine.

The reported combination of upgraded avionics, advanced weapons, improved electronic warfare capabilities and a new-generation engine reflects Moscow’s continuing effort to make the Su-57 a more capable fifth-generation combat aircraft.

Russia’s latest battlefield claim, if independently confirmed, would represent another significant milestone for the programme. It would also provide Moscow with an important opportunity to promote the Su-57E in the international defence market by highlighting what it describes as the fighter’s performance under real combat conditions.
