Prashant Kishor Wins Bankipur Bypoll, Marks First Electoral Victory for Jan Suraaj

Patna, Aug 2026 : Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor emerged victorious in the Bankipur Assembly by-election after counting concluded in all 31 rounds on Monday, marking the first electoral victory for the fledgling political outfit in Bihar.

According to the final counting trends, Kishor secured 63,203 votes, defeating his nearest rival, BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha, who polled 44,250 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,085 votes.

Kishor won by a margin of 18,953 votes, delivering a significant political setback to the BJP in a constituency traditionally regarded as one of its strongholds. However, at the time of the latest update, the Election Commission had not formally declared the result, with the official announcement still awaited.

The victory assumes added significance as it is Kishor’s first electoral contest for an Assembly seat and represents a major breakthrough for Jan Suraaj, which is still in the early stages of building its political organisation across Bihar.

BJP Accepts People’s Mandate

Reacting to the outcome, Bihar minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha said the party respected the democratic mandate and would accept the verdict of the electorate.

Sinha emphasised that the BJP does not blame the Election Commission or Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) when it loses an election. He said the party had complete faith in democratic institutions and the constitutional process.

According to him, the Bankipur result would be analysed at the organisational level to identify shortcomings and understand the reasons behind the party’s failure to retain the constituency.

Sinha also placed the result in the wider political context of Bihar, pointing out that the NDA had won 202 seats in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. He maintained that the latest result should be viewed against the broader electoral performance of the alliance.

He said the BJP continued to enjoy public support and would move forward with renewed determination.

BJP Promises Organisational Review

BJP Bihar state president Sanjay Saraogi also acknowledged the importance of the electorate’s decision and said the party would accept the outcome with humility.

He said the people’s verdict was supreme in a democratic system and that the BJP fully respected the mandate.

Saraogi said the party would conduct a detailed organisational review to determine why Bankipur voters had shifted their support and identify areas where improvements were required.

He also maintained that considerable development work had been undertaken in Bankipur before and after the BJP government came to power. Despite this, he said, the party would respect the voters’ decision and focus on understanding their expectations.

Saraogi further stated that the BJP’s commitment to the development of Bankipur would continue irrespective of the election outcome.

Major Boost for Jan Suraaj

The Bankipur result is particularly important for Prashant Kishor and Jan Suraaj. Kishor’s victory in a seat traditionally associated with the BJP could provide significant momentum to the organisation as it seeks to establish itself as a political force in Bihar.

The completion of all 31 rounds of counting has established Kishor’s substantial lead over his BJP rival. The final step remaining is the formal declaration of the result by the Election Commission.

Once officially confirmed, Kishor will enter the Bihar Assembly as the Bankipur MLA, marking a landmark electoral achievement for Jan Suraaj and giving the nascent party a significant foothold in the state’s political landscape.
