TCA Arena Inauguration Marks Major Milestone for Cricket in Tanzania: Jay Shah

Dar Es Salaam, Aug 2026 : International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah has described the inauguration of the newly built TCA Arena in Tanzania as a significant milestone for the development of cricket in the country, saying the facility reflects the growing ambition and rapid progress of the sport across the African nation.

Shah said the opening of the state-of-the-art facility demonstrated what could be achieved through vision, commitment and strong collaboration among cricketing and institutional stakeholders. He also praised the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) for its efforts to expand participation, strengthen its workforce and create better opportunities for players.

“The inauguration of the TCA Arena is a significant milestone for cricket in Tanzania and demonstrates what can be achieved through vision, commitment and strong collaboration,” Shah said in an ICC statement.

He described the progress made by the Tanzania Cricket Association as remarkable, noting that the organisation had shown considerable ambition in developing a modern cricket facility while simultaneously working to broaden the sport’s reach across the country.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by several prominent officials, including Prof. William A.L. Anangisye, Vice Chancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam; Neema Msitha, Secretary General of the National Sports Council; and Dr B.S. Sreekumar, Chairman of the Tanzania Cricket Association.

The opening of the arena comes just days before Tanzania is scheduled to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026, which will be played from August 8 to 18. The newly inaugurated TCA Arena will serve as the principal venue for the international tournament.

Shah said the facility could play an important role not only in hosting international cricket but also in developing players, coaches and match officials in Tanzania.

“The TCA Arena represents an exciting future for cricket in Tanzania and the wider African region,” he said, adding that the facility would provide a platform for Tanzania to host international matches while encouraging more young people to take up the sport.

He also reaffirmed the ICC’s commitment to working with Tanzania and other member nations to strengthen cricket infrastructure, develop local expertise and ensure that ICC programmes contribute to sustainable growth.

The development of the arena began in October 2024, following the allocation of land by the University of Dar es Salaam. A formal groundbreaking ceremony was held in April 2025, with ICC Directors and representatives from member nations attending the event.

Full-scale construction commenced in May 2025, beginning with extensive site clearing and ground preparation. The project was completed in July 2026, leaving the venue equipped and ready to host international fixtures.

TCA Calls Arena a Transformative Development

TCA Chairman Dr B.S. Sreekumar described the inauguration as a defining moment for Tanzanian cricket and said the facility represented much more than a cricket ground.

“The inauguration of the TCA Arena is a defining moment for cricket in Tanzania. This facility is far more than a cricket ground; it represents a vision for the future of our sport,” Sreekumar said.

He said the arena would provide players and coaches with a modern home for cricket while creating opportunities for Tanzania to host international competitions. The facility, he added, could also inspire a new generation of Tanzanians to take up the sport.

Sreekumar expressed gratitude to the ICC, the University of Dar es Salaam, the Tanzanian government, sponsors, partners, contractors and staff whose contributions helped turn the project into reality.

With the TCA Arena now ready to host international cricket, Tanzania is seeking to strengthen its position within the global cricketing community. The upcoming Challenge League B tournament will provide the new venue with an immediate opportunity to showcase its capabilities while giving local players and officials valuable exposure to international cricket.

The facility is also expected to contribute to the broader development of cricket in Tanzania by supporting participation, talent development and the country’s ambition to become an increasingly important cricketing destination in Africa.
