Bangladesh Seeks India’s Cooperation to Prevent Awami League Leaders From Making Political Statements

Dhaka, Aug 2026 : Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Advisor Humayun Kabir has sought India’s cooperation to ensure that members of the Awami League, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, do not use Indian territory to make political statements or undertake activities that could create instability in Bangladesh, local media reported on Monday.

According to Bangladesh’s Prothom Alo, Kabir raised the issue during a courtesy meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

The discussion reportedly touched upon social media reports suggesting that Sheikh Hasina could make a public speech on August 5. Citing a statement issued by Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the newspaper reported that Kabir conveyed Dhaka’s expectation that India would prevent political activities from its territory by individuals associated with the banned organisation.

“In this regard, the Foreign Advisor informed the High Commissioner that Bangladesh expects India’s cooperation in ensuring that any person from the banned organisation, including the fugitive Sheikh Hasina, cannot use Indian territory to make political statements or conduct any activities aimed at creating instability within Bangladesh,” the statement said, according to Prothom Alo.

The Bangladesh Foreign Ministry further said that the Indian High Commissioner assured Kabir that the matter would be considered and that necessary inquiries would be made.

The statement also indicated that India would remain vigilant regarding the issue. The reported discussion comes amid continuing political tensions in Bangladesh and heightened attention surrounding activities linked to the Awami League.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka, however, described the broader meeting in terms of strengthening bilateral cooperation. According to the mission, discussions during the courtesy call focused on expanding people-centric cooperation between India and Bangladesh on the basis of mutual interest and mutual benefit.

The Indian High Commission said the High Commissioner reiterated India’s intention to work positively with the Bangladesh government to advance the developmental aspirations of the people of both countries.

The two sides also emphasised the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and constructive engagement, according to the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry statement cited by Prothom Alo.

Both countries expressed hope that long-term and sustainable solutions to outstanding issues could be achieved through mutual trust, dialogue and continued engagement.

The latest diplomatic exchange comes as Dhaka seeks greater cooperation from New Delhi over political activities involving Awami League figures, while India continues to emphasise constructive bilateral engagement and cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
