Kangana Ranaut Apologizes for Farm Laws Remarks After BJP Distances Itself
New Delhi : Kangana Ranaut, the actor-turned-politician and Member of Parliament for Mandi, issued a public apology after her recent comments supporting the reinstatement of the controversial farm laws led to backlash. On Wednesday, she apologized and retracted her remarks, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) statement distancing itself from her views.
Earlier, Ranaut had called for the revival of the three farm laws, stating, “I believe the farm laws should be reinstated, and farmers themselves should demand it.” Her comments, however, ignited public criticism, especially from farmer groups and political figures, as the laws had been repealed after massive protests in 2021.
The BJP quickly clarified that her comments were not representative of the party’s stance. BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, “Kangana Ranaut’s statement on the farm bills is personal and does not reflect the BJP’s view. She is not authorized to speak on behalf of the party.”
In response, Ranaut posted a video on X, where she apologized and aligned her views with the party’s position. She emphasized her respect for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal the laws, acknowledging the sensitivity of the issue. “As a BJP worker, I must respect the decisions made by our leadership. I regret if my remarks hurt anyone’s sentiments,” she said.
Her apology came after Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja called her “habitually controversial,” accusing her of creating unnecessary controversy for attention. Ranaut has been involved in numerous political debates, and this incident follows the BJP’s earlier warning to her to avoid making contentious remarks.
Ranaut’s comments regarding the farm laws also reignited the debate around agricultural reforms. The laws, originally introduced by the central government in 2020, were aimed at modernizing farming practices but faced fierce opposition from farmers who feared the reforms would benefit large corporations at their expense. The year-long protests led to the eventual repeal of the laws in November 2021.
Ranaut’s apology marks a rare moment of retraction for the outspoken actress, who has previously stood firm in her controversial opinions. The incident also draws attention to her political career, with critics questioning her role as both an artist and a politician, especially with her upcoming film “Emergency” already generating further controversy.
While Ranaut’s apology may ease tensions, the controversy surrounding the farm laws remains a sensitive issue for many, and her remarks have once again brought the debate into the spotlight.
