Work begins on 39 automatic traffic junctions in Prayagraj with Rs 50 crore investment
Prayagraj : To enhance the experience of tourists and devotees at Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government, in line with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s vision, is implementing several innovative initiatives, with a major focus on improving road traffic.
For the first time, the government is building 39 automatic traffic junctions in Prayagraj to alleviate traffic congestion while enhancing the city’s aesthetics during the mega event. The government’s aim is to facilitate access to the city, and at the same time, modernize the traffic system, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable visit for all.
Additional Kumbh Mela Officer Vivek Chaturvedi stated that the 39 traffic junctions being constructed will streamline the traffic system in the city ahead of Maha Kumbh. These projects are being developed with a budget of approximately Rs 50 crores, and tenders for the work have already been issued.
“These junctions will facilitate smooth traffic flow and enhance the aesthetic appeal of Prayagraj for visitors during Maha Kumbh. Prior to their construction, a survey was conducted at these intersections by an agency to identify areas with significant traffic issues. Based on this assessment, the design for the junctions was developed,” he explained.
The introduction of these smart traffic junctions, a first for the city, is expected to significantly improve traffic management. They have been specifically designed to efficiently organize vehicle movement.
According to the Additional Kumbh Mela Officer, traffic junctions will feature specially designed islands, with adjustable sizes as need be. Each junction will be equipped with a fully automated smart traffic signal system.
To enhance the visual appeal of the junctions, sculptures and decorative lighting will be installed in the available spaces. Additionally, a green plaque will be created within each junction, featuring small ornamental plants.
These traffic junctions will not only assist in crowd management during the Kumbh bathing festivals but will also continue to benefit the city’s traffic system even after the Kumbh concludes.
