Chandannagar-Ian’s gear up for the commencement of the preparation for Jag

As per rituals the “Khar Bandha” has commenced from 20th. October, when artisan Sunil Nath and his team had managed to give the shape to the bottomneath elephant, representing the Karindrasura (Maha Gaja). After a pause the team had started from the early morning of 21^st. October forging the Lion – Vahana (Mount) of Mother Jagadhatri.

Around noon the lion got its shape; it is when Mr. Sunil Nath took some time off for a deep breath, and spoke with the writer. He informed that it was his mentor Mr. Gobindo Das who had encouraged the young Sunil to create the most subtle figures. The quest for artistic excellence began almost five decades ago.

He reiterated that it is absolutely necessary to understand the contour & size of the anticipated figure, before selecting the size and nature of the straws. It is the long straws which are used for creating a figure of the stature of Mother Jagadhatri. If long straws are not available in proximity, then short straws can be bonded together for necessitating the purpose.

The treasurer, Monojit Chakraborty while having tete-a-tete revealed the economies associated with the celebrations. He agreed with the writer that the “Khar Bandha” constitutes around 8% (eight percent) of the total cost of sculpting the idol.

Around 12.45 noon, the strive for Mother Jagadhatri began, which is again a formidable task. An ardent compilator, Mr. Sunil Nath was observed to be distinctive in selecting straws, binding them to a composite characteristic.
