Pilgrimage During Kartika Month

By Mira Pawar.

As Kartika Maas (October/November according to Gregorian calendar) approaches, many individuals and religious institutions begin planning visits to religious sites as it is considered very auspicious during this period. Sai Baba Temple in Sainikpuri organizes an annual pilgrimage for their devotees, every year, selecting a different destination. This year, they chose the Mallikarjuna Temple in Sri Salem.

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, on the Nallamala Hills, has one of the twelve jyotirlingas in India. This temple dates back to the 6th century and is famous for its stunning architecture, intricate carvings and spiritual significance. Another interesting fact about this place is that it also holds the distinction of being a Shakti Peetha.

The pilgrimage took off by Bus from the Sai Baba Temple where all the devotees gathered at a specified time. To ensure passenger’s comfort and safety, the travel was organised in a luxury Bus. The authorities at the Sai Baba Temple made sure that the trip is comfortable and affordable, as their motivation is grounded in religious devotion rather than commercial interests.  Each devotee received water, meals, snacks, and tea throughout the journey with stopovers for attending nature’s call. Provisions were made for overnight accommodation in Sri Salem at the Krishna Deva Raya Satram (resting place for travellers) which is noted for its cleanliness and comfort, on Reddy Satram Road close to the temple. Upon arrival, food was provided at the Satram, followed by a dinner service in the evening and lunch before departure, the next day.

As the trip was only for a day, it was not possible to organise group visits to other temples in the vicinity but the devotees were allowed to make their own arrangements and go around venturing other places of their interest. The most convenient mode of transportation in Sri Salem is Auto rickshaw and the cost is nominal. Cabs are also available in ample for those who do not wish to travel by Auto rickshaw.

The efforts put forth by Mr. Shankar Rao- Secretary of Sai Baba Mandir Society and his committee members in organizing this trip was truly commendable. We look forward to participating in this wonderful experience again next year and in the years to come.
