Pontoon bridge construction in full swing for Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj
Prayagraj : Following the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the construction of pontoon bridges for Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj is progressing at full speed. The Public Works Department (PWD) is working tirelessly to ensure the completion of all bridges ahead of the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 13.
Currently, five pontoon bridges have been made operational, with plans to make 19 bridges functional by December 10. The construction of the remaining 11 bridges will accelerate once the ongoing dredging work is completed.
The Chief Engineer of Prayagraj PWD, A.K. Dwivedi, stated that the goal is to complete the construction of all the bridges within the set timeline. He emphasized that special attention is being given to the quality and safety standards of the bridges. This bridge construction project is a crucial step to ensure the convenience and safety of pilgrims during the Mahakumbh.
He mentioned that the construction of five pontoon bridges has almost been completed and they have already been opened for use. By December 3, a total of nine bridges will be operational. By the time PM Modi arrives, 19 pontoon bridges will be completed and fully functional. The construction of the remaining 11 bridges will be completed soon, with work on these bridges set to speed up once the dredging is finished.
Currently, the Harishchandra, Old GT North, Chakr Madhav, Ganguli Shivala Road, and Rail to Jhusi bridges have been made operational for public use. These bridges are facilitating the movement of a large number of local residents, saints, and administrative officials. They are playing a crucial role in connecting traffic and Akhadas in Prayagraj. This will connect the Akhara to be built in Jhusi to the parade area, offering greater convenience to the pilgrims during the Mahakumbh.
For this year’s Mahakumbh, a total of 30 pontoon bridges are being constructed, the highest number ever. These bridges are designed to withstand loads of up to 5 tons. There is no compromise on the strength and safety of these bridges. Each bridge undergoes several testing procedures before being deemed fit for use. They are designed in such a way that they can handle the passage of a large number of people simultaneously.
