Gujarat Titans Opt to Bowl as Playoff Push Intensifies Against KKR
Kolkata, May 2026: Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first against Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 60 of the Indian Premier League at the iconic Eden Gardens on Saturday.
The high-stakes clash carries major playoff implications for both sides. Gujarat Titans entered the contest riding on a five-match winning streak and needed just one more victory to officially become the first team to secure a place in the IPL 2026 playoffs. For Kolkata Knight Riders, however, the equation was far tougher, with defeat set to confirm their elimination from the tournament.
After calling correctly at the toss, Gill pointed to the conditions and slight moisture on the surface as the key reason behind choosing to field first.
“There was a little bit of rain around yesterday, and the pitch looks slightly sticky. We feel batting might get easier in the second innings,” Gill explained.
The Gujarat skipper praised his bowling attack, crediting them for the franchise’s dominant run this season. According to Gill, while strong batting wins matches, championship-winning teams are built around in-form bowling units.
“Our bowlers have been outstanding this season. They’ve delivered consistently and that has helped us maintain momentum. We just need to continue doing the basics right and remain consistent,” he said.
Gill also acknowledged the importance of finishing in the top two positions on the points table, which provides teams with an extra opportunity in the playoffs format.
“We are not taking any team lightly at this stage. Every match matters now. We want to win our remaining games and stay in the top two,” he added.
Gujarat Titans retained the same playing eleven that helped them continue their impressive winning run.
Meanwhile, KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane remained optimistic despite the pressure of a must-win encounter. He confirmed the return of mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy, who came back into the side after recovering from a niggle, replacing pacer Vaibhav Arora.
“We are taking one game at a time. We need to win all three remaining matches and then see where things stand,” Rahane said.
The KKR captain also believed that the surface would remain largely unchanged through the course of the game despite early moisture.
“There’s a bit of moisture now, which is why we also wanted to bowl first, but I don’t think the pitch will change too much later on,” he remarked.
KKR will rely heavily on experienced campaigners like Sunil Narine, Rinku Singh and Rahane himself to keep their playoff hopes alive in front of the home crowd at Eden Gardens.
