Sonam Wangchuk Stable but Under Intensive Medical Observation, Blood Parameters Still Abnormal: Safdarjung Hospital

New Delhi, July 2026 : Innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk continues to remain under close medical supervision at Safdarjung Hospital, with doctors stating that although his condition is stable, certain blood parameters remain marginally abnormal following his prolonged 21-day hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.

In its latest medical bulletin issued on Sunday, the hospital said Wangchuk is receiving comprehensive treatment and is under continuous observation by a multidisciplinary team of specialists from Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC), Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi.

According to the bulletin, Wangchuk’s vital signs are currently stable, but doctors remain concerned about the physiological stress and systemic effects caused by his extended fast.

“Shri Sonam Wangchuk is being given the required medical intervention at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters are stable at present; however, his blood parameters remain marginally altered, and considering the physiological stress and systemic effects of prolonged fasting, he requires continuous medical care under the close observation of a multidisciplinary team of experts,” the hospital said.

Medical experts further emphasised that sustained treatment and round-the-clock monitoring are essential to promptly detect and manage any complications that could arise despite his present stable condition.

“The treating teams of doctors from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi, are of the considered opinion that sustained medical intervention and continuous clinical monitoring are necessary to identify and manage any potential complications at the earliest,” the statement added.

Hospital authorities confirmed that all necessary medical care is being provided and that Wangchuk’s clinical condition, including his blood parameters, is being monitored regularly to ensure timely intervention if required.

Meanwhile, Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, has sought his discharge from Safdarjung Hospital, expressing concerns over what she described as a lack of transparency regarding his treatment. In a letter addressed to the hospital authorities, she requested that discharge formalities be completed at the earliest so that he could be shifted to a medical facility of the family’s choice under the supervision of his long-term doctors.

Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after his health deteriorated following 21 days of continuous fasting. His transfer from the protest site at Jantar Mantar was carried out by Delhi Police in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court and based on the advice of medical experts.

The police action took place amid protests and sloganeering by supporters and activists gathered at the demonstration site.

The ongoing agitation has been organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 6, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and the paper leak controversy.

Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest on June 28 and began an indefinite hunger strike in support of the movement, calling for accountability and reforms in the examination system. His prolonged fast drew widespread attention from civil society groups, political leaders and student organisations, with growing concerns over his deteriorating health prompting judicial intervention and continuous medical supervision.
