India-Spain Ties: A Stabilizing Force for the European Union, Says Jaishankar
Madrid: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar underscored the growing importance of India-Spain relations and their potential as a stabilizing factor for the European Union (EU) during turbulent global times. Speaking at the 9th Annual Conference of Ambassadors, organized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of nations drawing upon their culture, traditions, and heritage to shape effective foreign policies.
Jaishankar thanked Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares for the invitation and shared insights on the conference’s theme, “A Foreign Policy with Its Own Identity.” He highlighted how countries that embrace multiple identities are better positioned to navigate uncertainties and global challenges.
“India’s relationship with Spain and the European Union can serve as a stabilizing factor amid today’s turbulent times,” Jaishankar stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Following his address, Jaishankar held extensive discussions with Minister Albares on strengthening bilateral partnerships in diverse areas, including trade, investment, defense, security, urban development, railways, green hydrogen, and climate action. The two leaders signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on sports and sustainable urban development, further reinforcing cooperation between the two nations.
In a subsequent post on X, Jaishankar expressed satisfaction with the wide-ranging dialogue, calling Spain a reliable partner in the Mediterranean and highlighting India’s strong relationship with the EU.
“We also exchanged views on global cooperation through platforms such as the United Nations, the G20, the Mediterranean, and the Indo-Pacific. Discussions extended to developments in Ukraine, West Asia, and other regions of interest,” Jaishankar noted.
Cultural and Strategic Collaboration
Jaishankar also highlighted the significance of upcoming cultural and technological collaborations. As India and Spain prepare for 2026 to be celebrated as the Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence, 2025 will serve as a platform to further strengthen bilateral ties and foster new areas of cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar’s current diplomatic visit to Spain marks his first as External Affairs Minister and is scheduled to continue until January 14.
The visit not only underscores the deepening relationship between India and Spain but also positions the partnership as a cornerstone of stability and cooperation within the broader European framework, especially during an era marked by geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
