Delhi Assembly Election 2025: AAP Forms Task Force to Woo Purvanchal Voters
With the Delhi Assembly elections around the corner, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified its efforts to connect with voters from the Purvanchal community residing in the national capital. Party sources have revealed that a special task force has been formed to focus on this demographic, which holds considerable influence in Delhi’s electoral landscape.
AAP has constituted seven dedicated teams under the leadership of senior party leader Sanjay Singh to cover all seven Lok Sabha constituencies in Delhi. These teams will strategize at the grassroots level to engage with Purvanchal voters and highlight issues affecting them. AAP plans to emphasize how the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has allegedly acted against the interests of this community, using recent incidents to bolster its narrative. This includes a controversy where a BJP national spokesperson was compelled to apologize for remarks made against an AAP MLA, an incident AAP intends to leverage to gain voter sympathy.
Reports suggest that AAP has already conducted around 600 meetings to address Purvanchal-related concerns. Meanwhile, the BJP is also taking significant steps to secure the Purvanchal vote bank. The party has formed its own specialized team of leaders from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, assigning them crucial roles to woo voters. Former MP and Assam BJP in-charge Harish Dwivedi has been appointed as the coordinator for this campaign. Over 100 BJP leaders from eastern India have been roped in, and they are set to actively participate in the electoral campaigns across Delhi starting this week.
Purvanchal voters, hailing primarily from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand, are expected to play a decisive role in the upcoming elections. Out of Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies, approximately 27 seats are heavily influenced by this community, with their population share ranging between 25% and 38% in several constituencies. Recognizing their significance, political parties, including AAP and BJP, have prioritized Purvanchal candidates, offering them prominent posts and election tickets.
As the election date of February 5 approaches, the competition for the Purvanchal vote bank has intensified. Both AAP and BJP are leaving no stone unturned to secure this critical demographic, which could be a game-changer in determining the election outcome.
Historically, the Purvanchal vote has been pivotal in shaping Delhi’s political dynamics. AAP’s dominance in the 2015 and 2020 assembly elections, where it secured 67 and 62 seats respectively, was partly attributed to its strong outreach among marginalized communities. In contrast, BJP managed only three and eight seats in those elections. The Congress, once a formidable force in Delhi, has failed to win any seats in the last two assembly polls.
With 699 candidates contesting for 70 assembly seats, the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections promise to be a fierce battle, with the Purvanchal vote likely to hold the key to victory.
