Dalai Lama Reaffirms Mission of Compassion, Plans Extended Stay in Ladakh

Dharamsala, July 2026 : Tibetan spiritual leader His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Thursday expressed gratitude for the outpouring of birthday wishes he received from followers and well-wishers across the world, reaffirming that compassion and service to humanity remain the guiding principles of his life. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate also announced that he would continue his recuperation in Leh, Ladakh, for the next several weeks after undergoing a successful medical procedure on his left knee last month.

In a heartfelt message issued after celebrating his 91st birthday, the Dalai Lama reflected on his life’s journey and said that helping others has always been the foundation of his spiritual practice.

“I would like to thank everyone for the warm greetings and good wishes on my 91st birthday,” he said. “When I look back on my life, I see that the core of my practice has always been to benefit others. It is with this altruistic motivation that I wake up every morning.”

The Tibetan spiritual leader emphasised that promoting compassion, kindness and concern for the welfare of others continues to be his life’s primary mission. According to him, these values are essential for creating a more peaceful and harmonious world.

“Spreading compassion and kindness remains the central purpose of my life,” he said. “I call upon my brothers and sisters around the world—young and old alike—to cultivate warm-heartedness and genuine concern for the well-being of others. Living with compassion is what gives life true meaning and purpose.”

The Dalai Lama also provided an update on his health, saying he was recovering well after a successful medical procedure on his left knee performed in New Delhi last month. He noted that Ladakh’s climate has once again proven beneficial for his recovery.

“Following the successful medical procedure on my left knee, I have been recuperating here in Ladakh. As in previous years, I find the climate here at this time of year very suitable for my health, and I plan to remain in Ladakh for the next several weeks,” he said.

The spiritual leader celebrated his birthday on July 6 at the Shewatsel teaching ground in Leh, where thousands of devotees, monks, dignitaries and admirers gathered to mark the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the Dalai Lama said that despite turning 91, he continues to draw strength from his lifelong commitment to serving humanity.

“Today I have reached the age of 91,” he remarked. “When I reflect on my life, I realise that the wish to help others has always been at the heart of everything I do. It is the first thought that comes to my mind every morning. People appreciate me not because of who I am, but because of the warm-heartedness and compassion I try to cultivate.”

In a light-hearted yet optimistic remark, the Dalai Lama revealed that dreams had given him hope of an exceptionally long life.

“Although I am now 91, indications from my dreams suggest that I may live until I am 130,” he said with a smile. “I hope to continue helping the Chinese people through the teachings of the Buddha and to inspire people around the world to lead positive, meaningful lives. That remains my aspiration.”

For more than five decades, the Dalai Lama has been a frequent visitor to Ladakh, where he enjoys a deep spiritual connection with the local Buddhist community. According to his office, he has been visiting the region for over 55 years, with residents sharing a unique bond of faith, devotion and affection with him.

Widely regarded as one of the world’s foremost advocates of peace, non-violence and interfaith harmony, the Dalai Lama continues to inspire millions across the globe through his teachings on compassion, mindfulness and universal responsibility.

The Tibetan spiritual leader has lived in exile in India since 1959, when he fled Tibet following the Chinese military’s takeover of Lhasa. Despite decades in exile, he has repeatedly expressed hope that he will one day be able to return to his homeland. Even at 91, the Dalai Lama remains committed to spreading the message of peace, compassion and human values, insisting that a life dedicated to the welfare of others is the greatest service one can render to humanity.
