SIR: More Than Just Registration, It Is the Foundation of Your Constitutional Right
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll to ensure that every eligible citizen’s name is accurately included in the voter list. It is important for citizens to understand their responsibilities during this campaign and the steps they need to follow.
In Maharashtra, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) campaign is being conducted from June 30 to July 29, 2026. During this period, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are visiting every household to verify voter details. The objective is to ensure that the electoral roll remains accurate, updated, and reliable. This exercise is not merely about voter registration—it forms the very foundation of every citizen’s constitutional right to vote.
Before the BLO’s Visit
Before the Booth Level Officer visits, citizens are advised to search for their own or their family members’ details in the 2002 electoral roll using the Election Commission of India’s ECI Portal, mobile application, or the “Search Your Name in Previous SIR” facility available on the Commission’s official website.
To conduct the search, individuals need to enter their name, along with the state, district, and Assembly constituency where they were registered in 2002.
If the individual was not 18 years of age in 2002, they may instead search using the names of their parents or grandparents. Keeping this information readily available will help the BLO complete the verification process quickly and efficiently.
During the BLO’s Visit
The verification process depends on the status of the voter’s records.
If the individual’s details have already been mapped with the 2002 electoral roll, the relevant information will already appear in the BLO’s enumeration form. Citizens should carefully verify the details, ensure they are correct, and then provide their name, mobile number, and, if they wish, their Aadhaar number, before signing the form.
In such cases, no additional documents are generally required. However, if considered necessary, the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) may request additional information or supporting documents.
If Mapping Is Not Available
If the voter’s details have not been mapped with the 2002 electoral roll, but the individual or family members know the earlier voter registration details or place of residence, they should provide that information to the BLO.
Using the official application, the BLO can retrieve the relevant records, complete the enumeration form, and obtain the voter’s signature.
If No 2002 Record Is Available
Some citizens may not have information about their own or their parents’ inclusion in the 2002 electoral roll. Even in such situations, no eligible voter will be excluded from the process.
The BLO will provide the enumeration form, collect the required information and signature, and continue the process as per the prescribed guidelines.
After the draft electoral roll is published, the concerned voter may receive a notice, if necessary. At that stage, the voter may be required to submit documents from the list approved by the Election Commission of India as proof of Indian citizenship or any other required eligibility criteria.
Role of Booth Level Officers
Booth Level Officers are playing a crucial role in this extensive verification exercise. Despite the challenges posed by the monsoon and varying geographical conditions, they are reaching every household to distribute enumeration forms, collect information, and conduct preliminary verification.
Citizens are encouraged to cooperate fully by providing accurate information, carefully reviewing the forms, and signing them wherever required. Such active participation strengthens the democratic process by ensuring that the electoral roll remains accurate, up-to-date, and trustworthy.
Ultimately, every citizen’s cooperation helps safeguard the constitutional right to vote and contributes to a stronger and more transparent electoral system.
