Approval for Fare Hike in Black-Yellow Meter Taxis and Auto Rickshaws

New Fares Effective from February 1, 2025

Mumbai : The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) had revised fares for black-yellow meter taxis (CNG) and auto rickshaws (CNG) in its meeting on September 26, 2022. Due to the increase in vehicle costs, consumer price index, and interest rates on vehicle loans, the authority approved a fare hike for black-yellow meter taxis and auto rickshaws in a meeting held on January 23, 2025.

The revised fares will apply to all black-yellow meter taxis (CNG) and auto rickshaws (CNG) operating within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority’s jurisdiction and will come into effect from February 1, 2025.

Only taxis and auto rickshaws that recalibrate their fare meters in accordance with the revised fare structure will be eligible for the fare hike. The recalibration process must be completed between February 1, 2025, and April 30, 2025. Until then, an officially approved revised tariff card will be valid only until April 30, 2025. Additionally, under the Motor Vehicles Act, the authority has approved the renewal of stage carriage permits for 1,850 BEST buses.

To enhance commuter convenience and improve last-mile connectivity, the authority has approved the establishment of two new black-yellow taxi stands, 68 auto rickshaw stands, and nine share-auto stands in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The state government had earlier constituted the Khatua Committee to determine the fare structure for black-yellow meter taxis (CNG) and auto rickshaws (CNG). Based on its recommendations, approved on March 9, 2020, fare adjustments are made considering factors such as vehicle costs, consumer price index, and loan interest rates. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority Committee was constituted under Section 68 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 by the state government.

Revised Fare Structure:

• Black-Yellow Meter Taxi (CNG):
  • Previous per km fare: ₹18.66 → Revised to ₹20.66
  • Minimum fare (for 1.5 km): ₹28 → Revised to ₹31
• Cool Cabs:
  • Previous per km fare: ₹26.71 → Revised to ₹37.20 (20% increase)
  • Minimum fare (for 1.5 km): ₹40 → Revised to ₹48 (20% increase)
• Auto Rickshaw (CNG):
  • Previous per km fare: ₹15.33 → Revised to ₹17.14
  • Minimum fare (for 1.5 km): ₹23 → Revised to ₹26
