Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Lays Foundation Stone for 2,404 New Housing Units Under Urban Habitat Development Board

Hon’ble Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru. M.K. The event took place today (January 29, 2025) at the Chief Secretariat.

The Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board was originally established in 1970 by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to provide safe and permanent housing for urban poor families. In line with this vision, the board was renamed the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board on September 1, 2021, by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, ensuring that urban housing projects include essential infrastructure such as drinking water, sanitation, electricity, transport facilities, education, healthcare, and solid waste management.

Since the new government took office, 42,313 housing units have already been constructed across 128 project sites at a cost of ₹4,752.46 crore for homeless and economically disadvantaged urban families.

As part of the latest housing projects:

  • Tirunelveli district: 468 units in Kamatchi Nagar at ₹59.39 crore

  • Anna Nagar: 432 units at ₹57.04 crore
  • Namakkal district: 520 units in Pallipalayam and Ayyakattur at ₹81.57 crore

Each housing unit will be approximately 400 sq. ft. and will include a hall, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. The project will also include well-planned roads, drinking water supply, drainage systems, and rainwater harvesting structures.

The event was attended by Chief Secretary Thiru. N. Muruganandam, Additional Chief Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Ms. Kakarla Usha, and senior government officials.
