CM Stalin Inaugurates Storage Facilities to Boost Food Security in Tamil Nadu
On behalf of the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Stalin laid the foundation stone for six additional modernized warehouses to be newly constructed at an estimated cost of ₹10.20 crore, along with the inauguration of six existing modernized warehouse complexes, 11 direct purchase centers, and four modern rice milling facilities built at a total cost of ₹92.45 crore.
Today (20.02.2025), at the Secretariat, the Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr. M.K. Stalin inaugurated six modernized warehouse complexes, 11 direct purchase centers, and four modern rice milling facilities, all constructed at a cost of ₹92.45 crore under the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, which operates under the Department of Cooperation, Food, and Consumer Protection. He also laid the foundation stone for six additional modernized warehouses with a storage capacity of 6000 metric tons, to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹10.20 crore.
To ensure food security for all and to strengthen the supply chain of food grains under the Public Distribution System (PDS), the government has increased storage capacity through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, facilitating procurement and distribution of food grains and supporting various government welfare initiatives.
Since the formation of this government in 2021, a total of ₹155.28 crore has been invested under the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation for constructing modernized warehouses with a total storage capacity of 84,000 metric tons. Additionally, ₹39.37 crore has been allocated for 63 direct purchase centers, and ₹236.09 crore has been spent on establishing rice milling facilities with a combined storage capacity of 2,82,750 metric tons.
Continuing this effort, the government is also focusing on setting up new warehouses in newly formed districts and expanding existing storage facilities.
As part of this initiative:
- A 3,000 metric ton capacity warehouse has been constructed at Ariyalur district, Ariyalur Taluk, at a cost of ₹4.96 crore.
- A 2,000 metric ton capacity warehouse has been built in Kallakurichi district, Kallakurichi Taluk, at ₹4.02 crore.
- A 3,000 metric ton capacity warehouse in Salem district, Kattur Taluk, at ₹5.23 crore.
- A 3,000 metric ton capacity warehouse in Sivagangai district, Singampunari Taluk, at ₹4.96 crore.
- A 2,000 metric ton capacity warehouse in Cuddalore district, Kullanchavadi Taluk, at ₹4.02 crore.
- A 2,000 metric ton capacity warehouse in Thiruvallur district, RK Pet Taluk, at ₹3.75 crore.
The total cost for these six warehouses amounts to ₹26.97 crore.
For the welfare of farmers, 11 new direct purchase centers have been established across various districts at a total cost of ₹6.87 crore.
In addition, four modern rice milling facilities have been constructed in the districts of Thiruvallur, Thanjavur, Kanchipuram, and Chengalpattu at a total cost of ₹58.61 crore.
In total, six modernized warehouse complexes, 11 direct purchase centers, and four modern rice milling facilities have been inaugurated at a total cost of ₹92.45 crore by the Honorable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
Furthermore, to enhance food storage facilities, the foundation stone has been laid for six additional warehouses with a total storage capacity of 6,000 metric tons, to be constructed at an estimated cost of ₹10.20 crore in the districts of Chengalpattu, Tirupattur, Pudukottai, Karur, Thiruvallur, and Dindigul.
The event was attended by Honorable Ministers for Cooperation, Food and Civil Supplies, Industries, and senior government officials.
