Non-Invasive Medical Intervention at B.R. Singh Hospital Saves Patient with Complex Cardiac Condition.
At the B.R. Singh Hospital, Eastern Railway, Dr. Ajay Goutam, Senior Divisional Medical Officer/ In-Charge, Cardiology Department along with his team successfully managed a complex cardiac case of Post Aortic Valve Replacement. The case involved a 52-year-old female patient, a known case of valvular heart disease and Post-Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR), who was admitted to the hospital with a persistent febrile illness. The patient had previously consulted private medical practitioners but showed no significant improvement in her symptoms. Upon admission to the Cardiology Department of B.R. Singh Hospital, a comprehensive evaluation was initiated. An echocardiographic assessment revealed the presence of vegetation on the mitral valve, indicating a case of Infective Endocarditis.
Mitral valve vegetation, a hallmark of infective endocarditis, refers to abnormal growths (masses) on the mitral valve, often composed of bacteria, inflammatory cells, and blood clots, which can lead to valve damage and complications like heart failure, stroke, or systemic embolisation. Endocarditis infection occurs along the edges of the heart valves. The lesions, called vegetations, are masses composed of fibrin, platelets, and infecting organisms, held together by agglutinating antibodies produced by the bacteria.
Treatment depends on the type of fungus or bacteria causing the infection and its severity. When caught in earlier stages, antibiotics can be effective. When there are vegetations, damage to the heart valve or an infected prosthetic valve, surgery is often necessary. In this case, Dr. Ajay Goutam, acclaimed to be a wizard immediately started on intravenous antibiotics, which were continued for over three weeks as part of the treatment protocol. Following sustained medical care and close monitoring, the patient became afebrile, thus a possible Invasion was averted.
A review echocardiography conducted on 1st April confirmed the disappearance of the mitral valve vegetation, indicating a successful recovery. The patient was discharged demonstrates after nearly a month-long stay in the hospital.
This case demonstrates to be an epitome of integrity towards medical jurisprudence, along with the exemplary clinical expertise and dedicated patient care available at B.R. Singh Hospital, which continues to deliver exceptional healthcare services to humanity.
