India Begin 2027 World Cup Roadmap as Rohit, Kohli and Bumrah Return for ODI Series Opener Against England

Birmingham, July 2026 : Team India will shift its focus firmly to the 50-over format when it takes on England in the opening match of the three-match ODI series at Edgbaston on Tuesday, marking the beginning of its preparations for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup. Following a disappointing T20I campaign, the return of senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah is expected to significantly strengthen the visitors as they look to make a fresh start in the format that will define the next phase of India’s white-ball ambitions.

The series carries added significance as captain Shubman Gill begins building a settled combination for the World Cup in South Africa. With most of India’s first-choice players back in the squad, the management will be keen to identify the ideal balance while giving experienced campaigners and emerging talents an opportunity to establish themselves.

India’s batting line-up once again assumes a familiar and formidable look. Captain Shubman Gill is expected to open alongside Rohit Sharma, reviving one of India’s most productive opening partnerships in recent years. The duo has averaged over 60 as an opening pair in One-Day Internationals, providing solid starts and consistency at the top of the order.

Gill enters the series in exceptional form. The young skipper has amassed 373 runs in just five ODI innings this year at an outstanding average of 93.3 and a strike rate of 117, including one century and three half-centuries. His rich vein of form will be crucial as India look to dominate England in their own backyard.

Virat Kohli also returns with several personal milestones within reach. The former captain is set to play his 300th ODI innings and could move closer to the historic 15,000-run mark during the series. Kohli has been in sensational touch in the format, averaging an incredible 123 across his last seven ODI innings since the start of 2025, reaffirming his status as one of the world’s premier 50-over batters.

KL Rahul is expected to continue as India’s wicketkeeper while occupying a vital middle-order role after an impressive outing against Afghanistan. Shreyas Iyer, one of India’s most dependable ODI batters, is likely to slot back into his preferred No. 4 position, adding further stability to the batting order.

India’s bowling attack also receives a massive boost with the return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who will lead the fast-bowling unit alongside Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and left-arm seamer Gurnoor Brar. Bumrah’s comeback strengthens India’s attack considerably and provides valuable experience ahead of a demanding international calendar.

The visitors will also be looking for another strong performance from wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who is only six wickets away from becoming the fourth Indian spinner to reach the milestone of 200 ODI wickets. His partnership with all-rounders Axar Patel and Washington Sundar could prove decisive on English surfaces.

England, meanwhile, will be eager to revive their fortunes in the 50-over format under captain Harry Brook. The young skipper has enjoyed an impressive run with the bat, scoring 850 runs in 17 ODI innings at an average of 60.7, including three centuries. Veteran Joe Root continues to be the backbone of England’s batting, while experienced leg-spinner Adil Rashid remains one of their biggest match-winners and is closing in on 150 ODI wickets.

Although India struggled in the recently concluded T20I series, history favours the visitors in the longer white-ball format. Since 2010, India have won seven of the nine bilateral ODI series played against England, underlining their consistency in 50-over cricket.

With experienced stars returning, a young captain leading a talented squad, and the countdown to the 2027 World Cup officially underway, Tuesday’s clash at Edgbaston presents India with an ideal opportunity to begin a new chapter in ODI cricket and lay down an early marker against one of their strongest rivals.
