ICAR – CIFRI promulgate perception of Ornamental Fish Promotion in Tripura’s Schools
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CIFRI) in collaboration with Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of Tripura had organised an awareness cum-input distribution programme on 17th April, 2025 at the office complex of the Tripura Fisheries Development Board, Collegetilla, Agartala, West Tripura.
The main objective of the programme was to create awareness amongst the different schools of preserving ornamental fishes in aquariums across the entire Tripura State. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Biswajit Shil, Hon’ble President of West Tripura Zilla Parishad, Agartala.
The programme was graced by Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Mr. S. Das, IAS, Director of Fisheries, Government of Tripura and Dr. S. K. Majhi, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Guwahati.
Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI in his inaugural addressal stated that ICAR-CIFRI is providing 50 aquariums with stand and other inputs (ornamental fishes, feed, aerator, and accessories) respectively to 50 (Fifty) schools of Tripura under the NEH programme of the institute to popularise ornamental fishing in aquarium among the people of Tripura. He also emphasised on the need to adopt scientific management of aquariums by school’s authorities and others officials.
Mr. S. Das, IAS, Director of Fisheries, Government of Tripura has thanked ICAR-CIFRI for taking unique initiatives to popularise ornamental fish preservations amongst the different schools of Tripura. He further assured that there would be sincere cooperation from the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Tripura in the endeavour of ICAR-CIFRI for the development of fisheries sector in Tripura.
On this occasion, a total of 14 aquariums along with stand and inputs (ornamental fishes, feed, aerator, and accessories) were distributed among 14 schools in the two districts -West Tripura and Sepahijala. The remaining 36 numbers of aquariums with other accessories will be distributed by the DoF officials in the different schools of other 06 districts collaborating with ICAR-CIFRI.
Since, the programme was aimed in developing avid interest among the students & teachers in aquarium oriented ornamental fish culture, a technical session was organised, in which installation of aquariums was demonstrated, followed by an inter active session with the teachers of schools, fish famers, and DoF officials. A total of 100 participants including school teachers, fish farmers, fisheries officials, and other dignitaries participated in the programme.
