India and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire; Military Action to Halt on Land, Air, and Sea : MEA
New Delhi : Shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a “full and immediate ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that both countries have agreed to halt all firing and military operations across land, air, and sea, effective from 5 PM IST on Saturday.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that the agreement was reached during a phone conversation between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of India and Pakistan earlier in the afternoon.
“The Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan contacted his Indian counterpart at 1535 hrs. It was mutually agreed that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land, air, and sea from 1700 hrs IST today,” Misri announced during a brief media statement.
He further added that instructions have already been issued to ground commanders on both sides to implement the ceasefire, and the DGMOs will hold another round of talks on May 12 at 12 PM to review the situation.
Earlier in the day, President Trump revealed the breakthrough on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating: “After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. Congratulations to both countries for using common sense and great intelligence.”
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also released a statement, confirming that he and Vice President J.D. Vance led the negotiations. “Over the past 48 hours, Vice President Vance and I held detailed discussions with senior Indian and Pakistani officials, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shehbaz Sharif, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Army Chief Asim Munir, and National Security Advisors Ajit Doval and Asim Malik.”
Rubio added, “Both governments have not only agreed to cease hostilities immediately but also to begin talks on a broader set of issues at a neutral location. We commend the leadership of Prime Ministers Modi and Sharif for their wisdom and statesmanship in pursuing peace.”
Further official updates from both nations are expected in the coming days.
