Erdoğan Sparks Outrage in India with Bold Backing of Pakistan
Amid rising anger in India over Turkey’s support to Pakistan during “Operation Sindoor,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reignited tensions by strongly reaffirming Turkey’s alliance with Islamabad. His remarks came as he congratulated Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and praised Pakistan as a “true friend” of Turkey.
“The fraternal bond between Turkey and Pakistan is a rare and enduring example of true friendship,” Erdoğan said. He emphasized that Turkey will continue to stand by Pakistan, just as it has during times of crisis in the past. Referring to Sharif as his “valued friend,” Erdoğan added that Turkey respects Pakistan’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“We wish peace and stability for Pakistan just as we do for our own nation. Long live Pakistan-Turkey friendship!” he declared.
These statements have fueled public outrage in India, particularly in the wake of “Operation Sindoor,” a large-scale Indian military strike targeting terror camps in Pakistan. Following the operation, Pakistan retaliated with drone attacks, during which Turkey reportedly extended military support—including drones, a warship, and tactical assistance.
India has viewed Turkey’s role as an open endorsement of Pakistan’s aggression. This has led to a massive social media backlash, with a growing “Boycott Turkey” movement gaining momentum among Indian citizens.
Erdoğan’s comments, made during a politically sensitive moment, are likely to further strain relations between New Delhi and Ankara. The timing of his message—coming soon after ceasefire talks reportedly facilitated by Turkey—has sparked speculation about deeper strategic ties between Turkey and Pakistan, much to India’s concern.
