AICTE approves Meghalaya’s first govt Engineering College in Shillong.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted approval to the Shillong Government College of Engineering for commencing undergraduate courses in civil engineering and electrical engineering for the academic year 2025-26.

Shillong Government College of Engineering is the first government engineering college in Meghalaya, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on January 16, 2023. The new institution will be set up at Mawlai Kynton Massar in East Khasi Hills district and will function under the academic affiliation of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

Thrilled to announce that Shillong Government College of Engineering has received the Letter of Approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for launching Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses, marking the first government engineering college in the state” Chief Minister Sangma announced on his microblogging site X.

The AICTE have issued the Letter of Approval to the Principal Secretary of Education, Government of Meghalaya, on April 30, 2025, to start two undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, each with an initial intake of 30 students for the academic year 2025–26.

An additional 10% of seats will be reserved for candidates from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) as per the state government’s policy, the official said. According to AICTE’s terms, the Meghalaya government must ensure the institution acquiesce with standards related to infrastructure, qualified faculty, and academic governance.

The government also plans to allocate sufficient funding to ensure the college meets these criteria. The Shillong Engineering College must obtain necessary affiliation and permission from NEHU, Board of Technical Education, and Board of Technical Education & Training, and follow the university’s prescribed admission timeline. The AICTE has prohibited any admissions beyond the approved intake.

Moreover, the engineering college is restricted from having any collaborative arrangements with any other Indian and foreign universities for the conduct of technical courses without obtaining prior approval from AICTE. Any such violation may prompt disciplinary action under the AICTE regulations.

AICTE encouraged the New Shillong Government College of Engineering to actively engage in national programs such as the Smart India Hackathon, ATAL Faculty Development Programs, and scholarship schemes like Pragati, Saksham, and Swanath, which support student innovation, faculty development, and inclusive education.
