Vijay’s Party TVK Eyes Cricket Bat, Mic, Whistle as Election Symbols

Chennai : Tamil film star Vijay’s political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is preparing to choose its official election symbol from a list of 190 free options provided by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The party is expected to finalise its choice before the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

According to party insiders, the top contenders include a cricket bat, a microphone, and a whistle, all of which have potential connections to Vijay’s film career and fan base. The whistle, for instance, has been closely linked to Vijay’s fan clubs and was notably featured in his hit film Bigil. However, it reportedly did not receive unanimous backing from party leadership.

As per ECI guidelines, registered but unrecognised political parties can apply for a common election symbol six months before the end of the current legislative assembly’s term. With the Tamil Nadu Assembly’s term set to end on May 6, 2026, TVK can submit its application from November 5, 2025.

TVK leadership has outlined four key criteria for selecting the symbol:

1. It must be easily recognised by voters.
2. It should relate in some way to Vijay’s identity or filmography.
3. It must not closely resemble any existing party symbols.
4. It should continue to resonate with the public even after the 36-hour silent period before polling.

“A party’s symbol is more than just an image—it’s a way to connect with people and spread the party’s message,” a senior TVK leader said.

The cricket bat is favoured for its universal popularity and appeal among youth, while the microphone reflects Vijay’s transition from actor to political voice for the people. Other symbols like a ring (representing unity) and a diamond (symbolising strength and value) are also being discussed.

TVK is also considering submitting original symbol designs to the ECI for approval. The final decision on the symbol will rest with Vijay, after discussions with senior party members and careful evaluation of all options.

TVK’s symbol selection marks an important milestone as the party gears up for its first major electoral test.
