Thanks to CM M.K. Stalin for Sanctioning ₹97.77 Crores as Cane Dues to Benefit 5,920 Farmers Supplying Sugarcane to Cooperative and Public Sector Sugar Mills
The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M.K. Stalin, at the Secretariat, ordered the immediate release of ₹97.77 crores as pending sugarcane dues to 5,920 farmers who had supplied sugarcane to cooperative and public sector sugar mills. This gesture greatly benefits sugarcane farmers from the districts of Thiruvannamalai, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Ranipet, Namakkal, Villupuram, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Tirunelveli, and Madurai. The farmers have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the Hon’ble Chief Minister.
Tamil Nadu currently has a total of 40 sugar mills: 16 cooperative, 2 public sector, and 22 private mills. Among these, 12 cooperative, 2 public sector, and 16 private mills were operational during the 2024-25 crushing season.
The cooperative and public sector mills crushed a total of 18.81 lakh metric tons of sugarcane from the beginning of the season until May 15, 2025. Out of this, 1.58 lakh metric tons were processed into sugar from 8.40 lakh metric tons of sugarcane.
Among the 12 cooperative and 2 public sector mills in operation, four cooperative mills—Tirunelveli-1, Tirunelveli-2, Subramania Siva, and Tirupathur—and two public sector mills—Perambalur and Arignar Anna—have already paid ₹329.34 crores from their own funds for purchasing 10.30 lakh metric tons of cane.
However, the remaining eight cooperative mills—Vadapalanji, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Chengalpet, Thiruthani, MRV, Cheyyar, and Madurandagam—have only paid ₹175.10 crores from their own funds for 8.51 lakh metric tons of cane. Due to insufficient financial resources, they were unable to pay the remaining ₹97.77 crores to the farmers, which had been pending for a long time.
In view of this, to safeguard the livelihood of sugarcane farmers, the Government of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned ₹97.77 crores as a loan to settle the dues of 5,920 farmers. This amount will be credited directly to the farmers’ bank accounts by the respective sugar mills without delay.
Present during this announcement were Hon’ble Minister for Environment and Climate Change Thiru. Siva V. Meyyanathan, Secretary to Government, Cooperation, Food and Consumer Protection Department, Thiru. R. Srinamoorthy, IAS, Director of Sugar Thiru. Anbazhagan, IAS, and other senior government officials.
