Smart Buses Equipped with AI-Based Security Systems for Safer Travel – Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Deputy CM Inspects ST’s Smart Bus in Thane
Mumbai : Ensuring the safety of ordinary passengers traveling in the state transport (ST) buses is a top priority. To enhance this safety, AI-based integrated security systems will be installed in new smart buses, making travel more secure, said Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Deputy CM Shinde conducted an inspection today in Thane of the IT-based security systems installed in the ST Corporation’s ‘Smart Bus’ operating between Thane and Nagpur. He shared his thoughts during the visit, which was also attended by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and senior ST officials.

Deputy CM Shinde stated that, with an average of 55 lakh passengers using ST services daily, it is essential that their journeys become increasingly safer. With this in mind, new smart buses will be equipped with integrated security systems based on Artificial Intelligence. These buses will include CCTV cameras to monitor driver behavior and passenger movement, along with Wi-Fi, LED screens, GPS tracking, and foam-based fire suppression systems.
These features will significantly enhance safety for women passengers and make it easier for drivers to operate the buses. Additionally, in cases where a driver is intoxicated or drowsy, the system will immediately trigger a siren, thereby helping to ensure safe travel for all passengers, explained Deputy CM Shinde.
He also praised Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik for his continuous efforts in bringing this system into effect and for his commitment to implementing transformational changes in the ST Corporation to meet future challenges.
The smart buses are equipped with an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and driver monitoring cameras. Blind spot cameras that provide a 360-degree view have also been installed to assist the driver.
Furthermore, for enhanced passenger safety, four surveillance cameras have been installed—two in the passenger area, one at the front, and one at the rear of the bus. Additionally, features such as a driver assistant screen, mobile GPS tracking system, LCD display, and a public announcement system have been activated.
