Heavy Rains Cause Flooding, Damage Across Lunglei District

On May 30 and 31, 2025, heavy rainfall caused flooding in various parts of Lunglei District. Many areas experienced damage to property and infrastructure, and several people were displaced or affected. However, there have been no reports of casualties or serious injuries so far.

The Lunglei District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) remains active 24/7 under the leadership of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Chief Executive Officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner Ms. Rochuangkimi Khenglawt. District officials, zonal officers, disaster management and relief personnel, and Quick Response Teams have been deployed across the district to assess damages and provide relief. Village and local disaster committees, along with community volunteers, are also actively involved in rescue and assistance efforts.

According to reports received by the DEOC/DDMA:

May 30, 2025:

  • Lunglei Chanmari and Farm Veng: Heavy rainfall caused flooding and waterlogging in residential areas. The Public Works Department (PWD) and local volunteers have worked to clear and repair damaged roads. Farm Veng experienced water damage near the cemetery area.
  • Bualte: Flooding occurred at Km 4 on the Lunglei-Lawngtlai National Highway (NH-54). The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has begun repair work.
  • Sekhum: Flooding damaged crops. Polytarpaulin sheets were distributed for temporary shelter.
  • Theiriat: Crop damage reported. No casualties.
  • Lunglei Electric Veng: Waterlogging near the house of Mr. C. Lalramtiama and the Mandir area. Polytarpaulin sheets distributed.
  • Bunghmun: Flooding near BCM Biak In area. Temporary shelters set up.
  • Hlumte: Partial damage to houses owned by Ms. Lalchawimawii.
  • Zobawk and Dawn: Flooding along NH-54, with repair work ongoing by NHIDCL and PWD.
  • Mamte: Partial damage to Assam-type houses owned by Mr. H. Lalramnghaka.
  • Sazaikawn: Flooding and repair works underway.
  • Lalnuntui and Lungrang: Flooding and road damage, with PWD repairs ongoing.
  • Tlabung and Zohmun: Flooding near the village, with repair work using JCB machines by PWD.
  • Lunglei Venglai: Waterlogging near Govt. Middle School; temporary shelter provided.
  • Tleu: Flooding and polytarpaulin sheets distributed.
  • Ṭawipui South: Partial house damage to the property of Mr. Lalfakzawma.
  • Haulawng: Damage near Hausiampa Hall.
  • Vanhne: Flooding near Vanhne Dinthar Veng, with damage to crops.
  • Hlumte: Partial house flooding and water damage.
  • Runtung: Partial house damage to properties owned by Mr. Lalsangzuala and Mr. Laldinliana.
  • Thingfal: Damage to PCI Biak houses.
  • Puankhai and Devasora: Flooding and repairs ongoing by PWD.

May 31, 2025:

  • Ṭawipui North-I: Flooding along National Highway near Mr. Lalthuthlungngheta’s house, with relocation of families.
  • Bunghmun: Flooding in various areas; evacuation of several families. Cemetery waterlogged.
  • Ramlaitui: Flooding near Mr. Vanlaldika’s property; relocation of families.
  • Theiriat: Waterlogging and crop damage.
  • Hmuntlang: Flooding and road damage.
  • Lunglei Farm Veng: Flooding along PWD road; polytarpaulin sheets distributed.
  • Sekhum: Flooding near houses of Ms. Lalhmingliani, Mr. C. Hrangvunga, and Mr. Lalhmunmawia; evacuation ongoing.
  • Lungrang South: Crop damage and flooding.
  • Lunglei Rahsiveng: Flooding in Vanhne panna area, damage near Govt PS-2; repairs and shelter provided.
  • Lunglei Chanmari: Flooding near WADA De-Addiction Centre; temporary shelters distributed.
  • Lunglei Bazarveng: Flooding on Parallel Road; repairs and shelter ongoing.
  • Haulawng: Flooding near Mr. Ramengmawia’s furniture workshop; no casualties.
  • Chawngte L: Flooding near Mr. Manghenga’s property.
  • Hauruang: Flooding near Riangvai cemetery; unclear extent of damage.
  • Lunglei Lunglawn: Flooding and waterlogging with temporary shelters.
  • Lunglei Zohnuai: Flooding in various areas; evacuation ongoing.
  • Serkawn: Flooding and repairs ongoing; evacuation and shelter provided.
  • Thenhlum and Bolia: Flooding and repairs underway; temporary displacement.
  • Lunglei Venglun: Flooding near Mr. R. Lalmalsawma’s property; polytarpaulin sheets distributed.
  • Zehtet and Mautlang: Flooding and ongoing repairs.
  • Lunglei Ramthar: Flooding near houses and the CRC building; polytarpaulin distributed. Water intrusion reported at Christ Redemption Church.
  • Pangtlang: Flooding and repairs underway.
  • Tlabung: Water supply damaged due to river flooding; alternative water supply arranged for two villages.
