Under the direction of the Lunglei District Commissioner, inspection conducted at Sazaikawn and Hauruang junctions for widening works and landslide-prone locations

Lunglei : Today, an inspection team led by Lunglei District Commissioner Mr. Navneet Mann visited the Lunglei–Tlabung stretch of NH-302, focusing on the widening and improvement works underway at the Sazaikawn and Hauruang junctions as well as areas prone to landslides. The purpose of this field visit was to identify locations requiring immediate stabilization and assess ongoing erosion control measures.

The inspection party included the Lunglei Municipal Council Ward V Councillor, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (E), the Disaster Zonal Officer, the DSP (Headquarters), the NHIDCL General Manager (P), the LA Branch Project Engineer, the BRN Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd. Project Manager, representatives from Sub-Headquarters YMA, and members of the Sazaikawn and Hauruang Local Councils and their respective YMA branches.

During the visit, officials noted stretches where slope protection and retaining works had not yet been completed. They emphasized the urgent need to construct retaining walls and improve drainage, especially in areas where unconfined runoff was causing banks to erode and soil to collapse. Teams from NHIDCL and the executing contractor were instructed to expedite slope stabilization, bank protection, and road-widening works. It was observed that delays in these critical tasks could lead to further instability, especially during heavy rainfall.

In the afternoon, the Disaster Zonal Officer (Serkawn) Mr. Beitlotha Nohro and local stakeholders—including officers from the DIPRO, the Geology & Mining Department, the police, and the Serkawn Local Council Chairman—convened at the Baptist Guest House in Serkawn. They were briefed by Mr. H. Lalduhkima and Mr. N.T. Hrangkima on the geological surveys and risk assessments already completed for vulnerable slopes. The team agreed that immediate remedial action was necessary to prevent landslides and ensure road safety.

The inspection concluded with a commitment to submit a detailed report to the Deputy Commissioner, outlining remedial measures and revised timelines for completing erosion control and road widening.
