Iranian Missile Strike Shuts Down Israel’s Largest Oil Refinery in Haifa
Jerusalem – In a major escalation of hostilities, Bazan Group, Israel’s largest oil refining company, has announced a complete shutdown of its facilities at Haifa Port following a devastating Iranian missile strike. The pre-dawn attack on Monday claimed the lives of three employees and caused massive fires, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Video footage captured the sprawling refinery complex engulfed in flames, with firefighting crews struggling to contain the blaze well into the morning. The missile strike significantly damaged the power station that supplies steam and electricity to the group’s facilities. “At this stage, all refinery and subsidiary facilities have been shut down,” Bazan stated in a filing to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, adding that a full damage assessment and operational review were underway.
The Iranian missile barrage was part of a wider aerial conflict that has gripped the region over the past four days. Sparked by Israel’s surprise airstrikes across Iran on Friday, the tit-for-tat escalation has so far claimed at least 244 lives in Iran and 24 in Israel, with the numbers expected to rise as hostilities continue.
Monday’s Iranian retaliation saw a wave of missiles rain down across northern and central Israel. Air raid sirens wailed, and thick black smoke rose over Haifa, one of Israel’s major port cities. Reports from the ground described multiple explosions in urban areas.
Among the hardest-hit locations was Petah Tikva, a city east of Tel Aviv. A missile struck a residential building there, killing four people and injuring several others. Mayor Rami Greenberg confirmed the evacuation of hundreds of residents from the affected building and three nearby structures. Images from the scene revealed multi-story buildings with shattered facades and debris scattered across streets.
With Bazan’s operations halted and civilian casualties mounting, the conflict between Israel and Iran continues to spiral. The shutdown of such a critical energy infrastructure raises concerns about broader economic and security repercussions for Israel as military tensions escalate in the region.
