Prepare a Detailed Plan for Planting 1.10 Crore Trees Each in Gadchiroli and Palghar Districts: Forest Minister Ganesh Naik

Mumbai : The state plans to undertake a massive afforestation campaign this year with a target of planting 11 crore trees across Maharashtra. As part of this initiative, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has set specific goals of planting 1.10 crore trees each in Gadchiroli and Palghar districts. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik has directed the Forest Department to prepare a comprehensive plan and ensure the availability of adequate saplings.

Minister Naik issued these instructions during a series of review meetings held at Sahyadri Guest House. The meetings were attended by Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Milind Mhaiskar, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force Shomita Biswas, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Srinivas Rao, Ramarav, Indurani Jakhar (District Collector of Palghar), Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Naresh Zirmure, Chief Conservator of Forests Ravikiran Govekar, Deputy Secretary Vivek Hoshing, and other officials.

Minister Naik emphasized that both districts are witnessing extensive developmental activities, and in parallel, the green cover must also expand. CM Fadnavis is committed to ensuring environmental sustainability, which is why he has insisted on planting 1.10 crore trees in each district.

Naik stated that species such as teak (sagwan) and sandalwood (chandan) should be included in the plantations. Additionally, a 100-acre plantation of teak and sandalwood should be planned in every forest range.

He stressed that the 11 crore trees across the state should primarily be native species. To meet this vast target, forest nurseries should be strengthened. If necessary, support from agriculture universities and private nurseries may also be sought.

Recommended species include jamun, banyan, peepal, bakul, parijat, bamboo, teak, and sandalwood, and each sapling must be at least three years old to ensure survival and growth.

Naik also instructed that efforts to identify suitable land and select appropriate saplings in Palghar district should be accelerated to meet the afforestation target on time.
