Iran Urges UN Nuclear Watchdog to Condemn Israeli Strike on Nuclear Facility
Tehran : Iran has called on the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to break its silence and condemn Israel’s latest strike on its nuclear infrastructure, labeling the attack a violation of international law.
Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, made the appeal in a letter to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, following an Israeli airstrike early Thursday on the Arak heavy water research reactor in Khondab County, Markazi Province, according to Local News Agencies.
Eslami criticized the IAEA’s “inaction” and urged the UN body to take a clear stance against what he termed an attack on Iran’s “peaceful” nuclear program. He emphasized that the agency’s failure to respond undermines its credibility and global non-proliferation standards.
The Israeli strike marks the seventh day of open conflict between Israel and Iran, which erupted on June 13 when Israel launched air raids targeting Iranian military and nuclear facilities. These attacks resulted in the deaths of several senior Iranian military officials and nuclear scientists.
In retaliation, Iran launched a series of missile and drone strikes against Israeli targets. On Thursday, a missile reportedly struck a building at Soroka Medical Center in southern Israel, injuring at least 71 people, according to Israel’s Health Ministry.
However, Iran’s mission to the United Nations rejected claims it targeted civilian infrastructure. In a statement, it said the missile was aimed at an Israeli military communications and intelligence facility and reiterated Iran’s commitment to international humanitarian law, stating that civilians and non-military infrastructure were not targeted.
