PWD Officials Present Road Improvement Proposals for Aizawl City to Chief Minister Lalduhoma
Aizawl : Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma was briefed by Pu Vanlalhlana, Minister for Public Works Department (PWD), along with senior PWD officials, regarding proposed improvements and expansion of several major roads within Aizawl city.
Pu Vanlalhlana stated that previous governments had plans to develop critical roads across Aizawl, but due to high costs, many of these projects were delayed or cancelled. He clarified that the current proposals are aimed at completing three important road development projects at reasonable costs, and the plans have now been formally presented to the Chief Minister.
Three locations were identified during the presentation—two along the Bawngkawn road section and one near Vaivakawn. One major proposal involves constructing a tunnel starting below the State Guest House area (towards Chaltlang Road), which would connect to both Ramhlun Main Road and Ramhlun Lower Road. It would also provide a direct link to the National Highway via Bawngkawn Police Station.
This tunnel would greatly ease traffic for commuters traveling from Ramhlun to the highway and vice versa. Currently, heavy vehicles face significant difficulty navigating this route. The estimated cost for this project is around ₹25 crore.
Another key proposal includes a viaduct construction starting from the Hrangbana Filling Station in Bawngkawn, near the tripper parking zone, towards Brigade Veng. Similar to the Serchhip Bypass Road near Sailiamkawn, the viaduct here would require elevation of approximately 49 meters, extending over 150 meters. The topography is favorable and land acquisition is expected to be minimal. The viaduct would emerge near the Greenwood Hospital, making access easier. This project is estimated to cost around ₹30 crore.
The Bawngkawn Road Project is expected to be the largest road expansion within Aizawl city. It would directly benefit an estimated 50,000 daily commuters.
Additionally, another major improvement proposal involves the Vaivakawn Road Expansion. The Vaivakawn junction development is expected to be implemented alongside the new Vaivakawn market construction. The plan includes widening the road from the Cultural Centre area up to the YMA Ground, ensuring smoother flow into the market zone. This project is estimated to cost ₹40 crore, and is expected to benefit over 30,000 daily commuters.
Although the ideas have been proposed, the exact funding sources are yet to be finalized. While no firm financial commitments were made during today’s meeting, discussions around funding models and budget allocations took place.
