PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme: Aiming to Reduce Power Bills and Boost Green Energy
Raipur : The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is not just about lighting up homes—it’s a transformative initiative to reduce the burden of electricity bills, promote sustainable energy, and empower citizens with energy independence. Launched by the Government of India to enhance the adoption of solar rooftop systems, the scheme was approved on February 29, 2024, with a focus on enabling residential households to generate their own electricity.
By supporting green energy through this campaign, the initiative also contributes to environmental balance and the creation of new employment opportunities. The government is offering subsidies to make solar panel installation more accessible and cost-effective for households. Under the scheme:
- ₹30,000 subsidy is provided for a 1 kW system,
- ₹60,000 for a 2 kW system, and
- ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more.
These subsidies help make solar power an affordable and fast-adopting solution. Apart from cutting down electricity bills, the scheme fosters clean energy usage and energy independence—marking a crucial step toward a greener future.
Financial Relief and Environmental Responsibility
The scheme operates on a comprehensive approach to reduce the financial load of electricity on households and support environmental sustainability. Beneficiaries receive a 60% subsidy on the cost of solar units up to 2 kW, and 40% for the additional cost between 2 kW and 3 kW systems. The maximum subsidy benefit is limited to 3 kW capacity.
Under this initiative, 1 crore households are expected to benefit, with up to 300 units of electricity provided free each month. The government will also offer guidance and assistance in securing bank loans for purchasing solar panels.
