Vikram Misri Assumes Charge as India’s New Foreign Secretary.
New Delhi : Vikram Misri, a 1989 batch IFS officer, took over as India’s next Foreign Secretary on Monday, succeeding Vinay Mohan Kwatra.
“Team MEA extends a warm welcome to Foreign Secretary Misri and wishes him a successful tenure ahead,” the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X.
Misri’s appointment was announced on June 28, following the conclusion of Kwatra’s extended service, which ended on July 14. Consequently, Misri’s tenure as Deputy National Security Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat was also shortened.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed gratitude to the outgoing Foreign Secretary, Vinay Kwatra, for his dedication and significant contributions to foreign policy and national security. “Particularly in the last decade, he has helped strategise and execute so many of our key policies. Wish him well in his future endeavours,” Jaishankar stated on Sunday.
Prior to becoming the Deputy NSA, Misri served as India’s ambassador to China from 2019 to 2021, notably during the Galwan Valley crisis. He has also served as India’s ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018), and has held various positions in missions across Pakistan, the US, Germany, Belgium, and Sri Lanka.
