Sonam Wangchuk Sets Three Conditions to End 23-Day Hunger Strike

New Delhi, July 2026 : Activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he will end his indefinite hunger strike on Monday only if three specific conditions are met, as he completed 23 days of fasting while undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital.

Wangchuk, who was admitted to the hospital on July 18, shared a handwritten letter on social media platform X, alleging that he was being kept under “illegal detention” while receiving medical care. In the note addressed to his supporters, he reiterated that he would not end his protest without concrete assurances from the government or elected representatives.

In his message, Wangchuk said he would call off the fast if the government accepted responsibility for what he described as failures in the country’s education system, particularly repeated examination paper leaks, and committed to addressing the issue.

The activist also stated that he would end his fast if he and the leadership of the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) were allowed to reach Parliament, where Members of Parliament and leaders from various political parties assured them that the matter would be raised and discussed in the House.

His third condition relates to his health. Wangchuk said that if his medical condition or any other circumstances prevented him from continuing the fast, he would agree to end the protest if MPs and political leaders visited him at Safdarjung Hospital and personally assured him that they would take up the issue in Parliament.

Wangchuk has consistently maintained that his protest is intended to draw national attention to what he considers serious shortcomings in India’s education system. He has repeatedly highlighted the issue of recurring examination paper leaks, arguing that they undermine the credibility of competitive examinations and adversely affect millions of students. According to him, the government must acknowledge these failures and introduce meaningful reforms to restore public confidence in the education system.

His prolonged fast has attracted widespread attention, with supporters, education activists and members of the public expressing concern over his health and urging a resolution to the impasse. Medical authorities at Safdarjung Hospital have said that Wangchuk is under continuous observation and receiving appropriate treatment, while closely monitoring his condition due to the extended duration of his fast.

In his latest statement, Wangchuk stressed that verbal assurances would not be sufficient. He said his decision to end the hunger strike would depend on clear and credible commitments from the government or elected representatives to address the issues he has raised and ensure they are debated in Parliament.
