Emotional Lionel Scaloni Hints at Uncertain Future After Argentina’s World Cup Final Defeat

New York, July 2026 : Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni struggled to hold back tears as he reflected on his future following his team’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, admitting that he needs time to decide whether to continue in the role after his contract expires later this year.

Scaloni, who guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, was hoping to become only the second coach in football history to successfully defend the World Cup title. As the press conference continued, Scaloni became visibly emotional and briefly paused while trying to compose himself.

“Please bear with me. I don’t know if I can continue,” he said through tears. “This place is wonderful. It’s a dream position. None of us, including my coaching staff, ever imagined we would reach this level. But to continue, you need enormous energy. You have to reset your mind and build another group like this. That isn’t easy.”

Scaloni also addressed questions regarding captain Lionel Messi, whose future with the national team has become a major talking point after the tournament. The 39-year-old forward scored eight goals during the World Cup but found it difficult to influence the final as Spain’s disciplined midfield and defence successfully limited his impact.

The Argentina coach said he had not yet discussed retirement or future plans with Messi.

“He’s 39 years old now,” Scaloni said. “For me, it has always been clear that he will continue playing until he decides to stop. That decision belongs entirely to him.”

Scaloni paid glowing tribute to the Argentine captain, describing Messi as the greatest footballer in history.

“I hope everyone feels proud of what he has achieved because, for me, he is the best football player ever to step onto a football pitch. I have absolutely no doubt about that. What he did during this World Cup was incredible, and of course everything he has done throughout his career has been extraordinary.”

Although Argentina fell short of retaining the title, Scaloni praised his players for their commitment and resilience throughout the tournament.
