The previous record of five clean sheets had been jointly held by seven goalkeepers, including Jan Jongbloed (Netherlands, 1974), Walter Zenga (Italy, 1990), Claudio Taffarel (Brazil, 1994), Fabien Barthez (France, 1998), Oliver Kahn (Germany, 2002), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy, 2006) and Spain legend Iker Casillas (2010).

Simon’s run of defensive excellence stretched back to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the goalkeeper going 649 minutes without conceding before Belgium finally breached Spain’s defence in the quarterfinals.

By winning the Golden Glove, Simon became only the second Spanish goalkeeper to receive the honour after Iker Casillas, who played a crucial role in Spain’s maiden World Cup triumph in South Africa in 2010.
