Gautam Adani Unveils Bold Vision for AI-Driven Healthcare and National Growth at Spine Surgery Conference
At SMISS-AP 2025 in Mumbai, Adani Pledges ₹60,000 Cr for Healthcare, Announces AI-First 1,000-Bed ‘Healthcare Temples’ in Ahmedabad and Mumbai
Mumbai — In a thought-provoking keynote at the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery – Asia Pacific (SMISS-AP), Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, laid out an ambitious vision to transform India’s healthcare landscape. Addressing a gathering of spine specialists at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Adani praised the role of spine doctors in restoring human dignity and urged a blend of technology and empathy to revolutionize care delivery.
Adani opened his address by emphasizing the power of healing and humanity. Referencing the popular Bollywood film Munnabhai MBBS, he said, “Healing is hope. Healing is humanity.” He urged the medical community to place compassion at the core of innovation and treatment.
Sharing insights from his own journey—from a teenage migrant in Mumbai with no degree or job to leading one of India’s largest infrastructure conglomerates—Adani recounted key milestones that shaped his entrepreneurial outlook. He described his early commission deal in Mumbai that earned him ₹10,000 from a Japanese buyer as a turning point, highlighting the importance of belief over doubt. He recalled how managing his brother’s PVC film factory at age 19 taught him resilience, people skills, and how to operate within the constraints of the License Raj.
Adani recounted the transformative success of the Mundra project in Gujarat, which began with a vision to build a salt export jetty. Despite skepticism and inexperience in construction, the Adani Group went on to build India’s largest multi-cargo port there. Today, Mundra is also home to the world’s largest single-site thermal power plant and a massive hub for solar and wind energy.
Drawing parallels between the spine’s structural role and the resilience needed in entrepreneurship and nation-building, Adani stressed that strength must be rooted in conviction. He linked this metaphor to the future of healthcare in India.
Adani warned of a “silent crisis” gripping the country—low back pain, now the leading cause of disability in India, affecting nearly one in two adults annually. He urged medical professionals and innovators to address this issue head-on through AI-powered diagnostics and mobile surgical units that can reach India’s underserved rural areas.
He then announced a landmark initiative: the launch of AI-first Healthcare Temples—1,000-bed integrated medical campuses in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Designed to be world-class and affordable, these campuses will be developed in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic, ensuring adherence to global medical standards. “We will be delivering on this promise through the Adani Healthcare Temples,” he said, adding that these facilities would unite clinical care, research, and advanced technology.
Adani committed ₹60,000 crore toward healthcare, education, and skill development over the coming years, calling for a “revolution rooted in intelligence and empathy” rather than incremental change. “Healthcare does not need upgrades—it needs a redesign,” he declared.
He further disclosed that the Adani Group is preparing for an unprecedented capital expenditure of nearly $100 billion over the next five years. This, he stated, is the largest such investment by any private player in Indian history and reflects the group’s confidence in the country’s growth trajectory.
The Chairman also spotlighted the Adani Group’s growing presence across sectors. In renewable energy, it is now the world’s second-largest solar power company and builder of the world’s largest single-site hybrid renewable energy park in Gujarat. The conglomerate is India’s largest private airport operator, managing over 25% of domestic passenger traffic and 38% of cargo.
The Group handles 30% of India’s seaborne cargo and operates an integrated energy portfolio spanning thermal and renewable power, hydrogen, LNG, battery storage, and EV charging. It has also made significant strides in cement, aerospace, defence, data centres, and real estate.
Adani closed his speech with a rousing call to action for India’s medical and entrepreneurial communities: “If you dream of a med-tech breakthrough — go for it! If you want to serve India at scale and with empathy — go for it!” He concluded with a powerful statement connecting health to national progress: “India cannot rise if her people cannot stand. And her people cannot stand without you.”
The event ended with a standing ovation and a renewed sense of purpose among attendees—spine specialists, healthcare leaders, and industry pioneers—who were inspired to become pillars of change in India’s journey toward a healthier, stronger future.
