Sukma District Writes a New Chapter in Shrimp Farming

Shrimp farming to begin in selected ponds across five gram panchayats, providing a new source of livelihood for villagers

Raipur : The Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, known for its rich natural resources and biodiversity, is now moving toward a new revolution in the agricultural sector. Going beyond traditional farming, the farmers of Sukma are increasingly embracing fish and shrimp farming as a step toward self-reliance. With the support of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Sukma, farmers are being provided with technical training and guidance, encouraging them to adopt modern and profitable farming practices.

Under the guidance of the District Collector, integrated farming systems are being promoted. A team led by fishery expert Dr. Sanjay Singh Rathore from KVK Sukma and Mr. D.L. Kashyap from the Fisheries Department conducted a detailed inspection of 40 ponds in five gram panchayats—Bhelwapal, Jhapra, Gongla, Moortonda, and Gadiras—under the Sukma development block. These ponds were found suitable for shrimp cultivation. In the near future, formal shrimp farming will be launched in these ponds under the supervision of fisheries experts from KVK and in coordination with the District Fisheries Department. This initiative will not only boost fish production in the district but will also significantly strengthen the rural economy.

Shrimp: A Nutritious and Lucrative Resource

Shrimp is an omnivorous freshwater aquatic species that migrates to slightly saline water during breeding. It naturally feeds on microscopic organisms, insects, and organic matter present in the water. Shrimp is an excellent source of protein and essential fats. Its regular consumption promotes brain development and offers considerable benefits for heart health and the prevention of malnutrition.

Widespread Benefits for Farmers

Compared to traditional crops, shrimp farming offers farmers the potential for faster and higher income. It will also create new self-employment opportunities, encouraging more youth to take up farming. Significantly, this project marks a historic step toward strengthening rural livelihoods in Sukma district. Thanks to the joint efforts of the District Administration, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, and the Fisheries Department, Sukma is rapidly advancing toward becoming a leading district in the field of shrimp farming in the state.
