Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap Announce Separation After Seven Years of Marriage
The badminton stars, who trained and rose to fame together, end their journey as a couple while seeking peace and healing.
In a heartfelt and unexpected announcement, Indian badminton star Saina Nehwal has revealed her separation from her husband and fellow shuttler Parupalli Kashyap, bringing an end to their seven-year-long marriage. The couple, who have shared not just a personal life but also a professional journey for nearly two decades, have mutually decided to part ways.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday night, Saina posted a brief but emotional statement: “Life sometimes takes us in different directions. After much thought, Kashyap and I have decided to separate. We are choosing the path of peace, progress, and healing for ourselves and each other. I am grateful for those memories and wish you only the best moving forward. Thank you for understanding and respecting our privacy during this time.” As of now, Kashyap has not issued a public statement.
Saina Nehwal and Parupalli Kashyap first met in 1997 during a training camp, and their bond grew stronger as they trained together at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad from 2005 onwards. Their friendship evolved into love after their participation in the 2012 London Olympics, where both made significant strides in their respective careers. The couple tied the knot in December 2018, blending their personal and professional lives with mutual support and dedication to the sport.
Saina has long been a trailblazer in Indian badminton. She became a national icon when she clinched a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics, becoming the first Indian female shuttler to reach the Olympic podium. She further cemented her legacy in 2015 by reaching the World No. 1 ranking, a first for an Indian woman in singles badminton.
Kashyap, too, made his mark in international badminton. He rose to fame with a bronze medal win at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and then reached the quarter-finals at the 2012 London Olympics, becoming the first Indian male shuttler to do so. His biggest achievement came in 2014, when he won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, ending a 32-year drought for India in men’s singles at the Games.
The duo has long been celebrated for their chemistry both on and off the court, often seen cheering each other during matches and representing a generation of Indian athletes who redefined badminton in the country. Their decision to separate has come as a shock to fans and the sports fraternity, who have always admired their camaraderie and shared journey.
Despite personal changes, both athletes remain revered figures in the world of Indian sports. Saina, in particular, is credited with revolutionizing badminton in India, inspiring a wave of young talent and elevating the nation’s global standing in the sport. Parupalli Kashyap, with his grit and breakthrough performances, has also contributed significantly to the rise of Indian badminton on the international stage.
While their marital journey comes to an end, their individual contributions and legacy in the world of badminton remain untouched. As they move forward separately, fans and well-wishers continue to support them, hopeful for new beginnings and continued success in their respective lives.
