Employment Opportunities for SHG Women through Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana

465 Women Join the ‘Lakhpati Didi’ Club in Sarguja

Raipur : The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) has not only succeeded in providing permanent housing to the needy but has also become a strong catalyst for rural economic development and women’s empowerment. Under this flagship scheme, millions of families have received their dream homes where they now live safely and with dignity.

A remarkable aspect of the scheme is the employment and self-reliance opportunities it has created for women. In Sarguja district, a significant number of women from self-help groups (SHGs) have become actively involved in supplying construction materials under PMAY-G. These women have availed group loans to provide essential building materials such as bricks, cement, gravel, steel rods, centering plates, and mixer machines to housing beneficiaries.

In brick manufacturing alone, 281 women—referred to as Didis—have taken a lead role, with their bricks being used directly in house construction. Additionally, 413 women have started renting out centering plates after availing bank linkages and group loans. Some, with the support of their families and loan assistance, have purchased cement mixer machines and are now renting them out locally. Others have ensured the availability of essential construction materials like cement, gravel, and steel rods at the gram panchayat level, easing access for housing beneficiaries.

These entrepreneurial efforts are yielding consistent income for the women, making them financially independent and self-reliant. As a result, a total of 465 women in the district have now joined the prestigious ‘Lakhpati Didi’ club—women who earn over one lakh rupees annually.

These women have expressed their gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, acknowledging that PMAY-G has brought a new light into their lives. For them, the scheme is not just about building houses—it has become a pathway to self-sufficiency, dignity, and a better future.
