“Now set the target to place Gorakhpur among India’s top three cleanest cities,” says CM

Gorakhpur : Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, on Wednesday, praised Gorakhpur residents for their active role in development efforts, stressing that public funds—drawn from taxpayers’ money—must be used transparently and without compromising on quality.

The Chief Minister made the remarks while addressing a felicitation ceremony for Safai Mitras who played a vital role in making Gorakhpur a nationally recognized performer in the Swachh Survekshan. The event also marked the inauguration and laying of the foundation stone for 177 development projects worth Rs 253 crore on Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation premises.

Extending greetings to the citizens on the auspicious occasion of Sawan Shivratri, CM Yogi said that Gorakhpur has secured third place nationally in the “Safai Mitra Surakshit Shehar” category in the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25, ranking fourth among cities with a population of 3 to 10 lakh. In comparison, Gorakhpur held the 24th position last year and was ranked 74th the year before. Calling the jump from 74th to 4th rank in just three years a significant accomplishment, he said, “Now our next target should be to break into the top three. Every citizen must contribute actively to achieve this goal.”

CM Yogi expressed satisfaction over Gorakhpur securing a spot among the top ten cleanest cities—an achievement he had targeted last year. “Now we must aim even higher. With collective effort, Gorakhpur can achieve the top rank in its category,” he said.

Recalling Gorakhpur’s transformation, CM Yogi said, “There was a time when the city was known for mosquitoes, mafias, filth, chaos, and crumbling infrastructure. Civic amenities were poor, traffic jams were routine, and even light rain led to flooding. Today, Gorakhpur has shed that image and become a symbol of the new Uttar Pradesh—aligned with the vision of a new India. Healthy competition is the way forward.”

He further appreciated the citizens of Gorakhpur for their unwavering support. “People here contributed selflessly to development, even sacrificing homes and shops for road widening,” CM Yogi said. “Thanks to this spirit of cooperation, roads are now wider, and the drainage system has improved significantly. This transformation reflects the power of public participation and responsible governance.”

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that through the effective use of technology and a spirit of teamwork, the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation is playing a vital role in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat by promoting a ‘Healthy India’ through its remarkable achievements in cleanliness. He emphasized that true national development is only possible when progress is achieved across all sectors, including cleanliness, health, infrastructure, and technology. Holistic development, he said, is the foundation of sustainable growth. The state government is fully aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of transforming India into ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047.

During the event, Member of Parliament Ravi Kishan Shukla praised the Chief Minister’s visionary leadership and developmental approach, urging all public representatives to take inspiration from CM Yogi’s efficient and sensitive working style.

Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava provided a detailed overview of the development projects and affirmed the Municipal Corporation’s commitment to securing an even better position in the upcoming cleanliness rankings under the Chief Minister’s guidance. Gorakhpur Rural MLA Vipin Singh also addressed the gathering.

The event saw the presence of several prominent leaders, including BJP State Vice President and MLC Dr. Dharmendra Singh, MLAs Mahendrapal Singh, Dr. Vimlesh Paswan, Pradeep Shukla, Sarwan Nishad, former Mayor Dr. Satya Pandey, Deputy Chairman of the Municipal Corporation Executive Committee Dharmdev Chauhan, BJP District President Janardan Tiwari, former District President Yudhishthir Singh, former Mahanagar President Rajesh Gupta, and Maya Bazaar Ward Councillor Samad Gurfan.

As part of the ceremony, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honoured Safai Mitras and councillors for their exceptional contributions to cleanliness. Among those felicitated were Safai Mitras Belas, Sobrati, and Jaggu from the Jalkal Department, as well as Urmila and Annu from the Health Department, who received certificates and gifts.

In the Clean Ward Competition, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath felicitated several councillors for their outstanding contributions to cleanliness drives, including Poonam Singh (Rapti Nagar), Ajay Ojha (Vikasnagar), Gunja (Gopalpur), Rananjay Singh (Girdharganj), Aarti Singh (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Nagar), and others. Consolation certificates were awarded to Saroj Paswan (Chargawan), Sarita Yadav (Salikram), and Manu Jaiswal (Vijay Chowk). On the occasion, the CM also handed over a Rs 1 lakh cheque from the Safai Mitra Welfare Fund to Sameer, son of sanitation worker Sunil, as financial assistance.

To conclude the event, the Chief Minister flagged off 12 newly inducted cleaning vehicles, further strengthening the sanitation fleet of the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation.

Before addressing the public function, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated the state’s first Urban Flood Management Cell, established at the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation. On this occasion, he inspected the facility and reviewed its operational framework. Officials briefed him that the cell functions as an urban flood early warning system.

Under this system, all pumping stations in the city have been fully automated. Additionally, 110 automatic water level recorders have been installed across primary and secondary drains. These devices trigger automated alerts to concerned officials whenever the water level in any drain exceeds 80 percent. The system also sends timely notifications regarding fuel shortages and pump maintenance requirements.
The Chief Minister expressed great satisfaction with the innovative system and its potential to enhance urban flood preparedness.

During his visit to the Municipal Corporation building, CM Yogi also held an informal conversation with the Mayor and posed for a group photograph with the team.
