Japan to establish Center of Excellence for green hydrogen production in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow : With a strong push toward energy self-reliance, the Yogi government is advancing green hydrogen and renewable energy initiatives to boost employment and sustainability. Acting on Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s directives, a high-level delegation visited Japan recently, resulting in a major breakthrough—Japanese entrepreneurs have agreed to set up a Center of Excellence for green hydrogen in Uttar Pradesh.

During the visit, the delegation explored cutting-edge technologies, including the next-generation hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the Toyota Mirai, which runs by combining hydrogen and oxygen, emitting only water as a byproduct. This aligns perfectly with Uttar Pradesh’s vision for a zero-emission transport policy.

Discussions also covered potential collaborations to promote green hydrogen production and energy innovation. These initiatives are expected to help Uttar Pradesh develop a robust ecosystem for clean energy. The Director of UPNEDA emphasized the need to deepen partnerships with global institutions to boost renewable energy generation in the state, especially through solar, hydro, and biomass-based power solutions.

The delegation visited several advanced facilities in Japan’s Yamanashi Prefecture, including the NESRAD Green Hydrogen Plant, the Suntory Hakushu Distillery—home to a power-to-gas technology plant—and the Hydrogen Research Center. These research-oriented visits will enable Uttar Pradesh to adopt international best practices and innovative technologies.

Further discussions were held to forge partnerships with Japanese firms for establishing Centers of Excellence aimed at advancing sustainable energy and green mobility in UP. This initiative by the Yogi government marks a significant stride toward building a future-ready, green energy infrastructure in the state.
