Under the Leadership of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, Rajasthan Advances on the Path of ‘Prosperity through Cooperation’
Large-scale expansion of food grain storage capacity in the state – Farmers’ concerns will ease, wastage of grains will stop, and PACS will gain additional income
Jaipur, Aug 2025 : Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Bhajanlal Sharma, the Rajasthan government is working with full commitment for the welfare of farmers. Despite adverse conditions, farmers toil to produce food for everyone. Yet, due to unfavorable weather and lack of storage capacity, their produce often goes to waste. To address this concern, the state is rapidly developing food grain storage capacity by constructing warehouses on a large scale within the cooperative sector.
As part of the “Prosperity through Cooperation” program, the Government of India is implementing the world’s largest grain storage scheme in the cooperative sector. Special efforts are being made under the leadership of CM Sharma to ensure that Rajasthan’s farmers fully benefit from this ambitious initiative and that their harvests remain safe. Under this state-funded scheme, priority is being given to districts with relatively lower storage capacity compared to their production levels.
In the 2024–25 Budget, a provision of ₹31 crore was made for constructing 100 warehouses of 500 MT capacity and for rebuilding 50 dilapidated warehouses of 100 MT capacity. Similarly, in the 2025–26 Budget, ₹45 crore was allocated for constructing 100 warehouses of 500 MT capacity, 50 warehouses of 250 MT capacity, and 100 warehouses of 100 MT capacity (reconstruction). Additionally, approval has been obtained for the construction of 48 warehouses of 500 MT capacity under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY).
The plan aims to create a total of 1,61,500 metric tonnes of additional storage capacity across 2024–25 and 2025–26. Out of the 100 warehouses of 500 MT capacity announced in the 2024–25 budget, construction of 36 warehouses has already been completed. On July 17, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah inaugurated 24 of these warehouses. Reconstruction of the 50 dilapidated warehouses of 100 MT capacity announced in 2024–25 is currently underway. In the 2025–26 budget, approval has already been issued for 47 out of 100 warehouses of 500 MT capacity and 47 out of 50 warehouses of 250 MT capacity. Similarly, 82 out of 100 warehouses of 100 MT capacity have been approved for reconstruction.
For priority leasing of these warehouses, national-level agencies NAFED and NCCF have issued letters of assurance. The Cooperative Department has also kept the option open to lease warehouses to the private sector for storage, alongside giving priority to government departments/institutions. For this, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been issued by the department.
The construction of these new warehouses will relieve farmers from the compulsion of selling their produce at low prices. With adequate storage facilities available to Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), transportation costs of grains will also be reduced. Moreover, the creation of new storage capacity will prevent wastage of food grains while also enhancing the income of cooperative societies through warehouse rentals.
The state government’s initiative of providing 100% grant support for these warehouses under the scheme is being widely appreciated across the country.
