Mamata Banerjee Protests Against Constitution Amendment Bill in Lok Sabha

Kolkata, Aug 2025 : The Constitution Amendment Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha, sparking widespread controversy. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to social media platform X to express her strong opposition to the bill, labeling it a “black day” and a “black bill”. The bill, along with two others related to removal from the cabinet, has generated significant debate.

The three bills in question are: the 130th Amendment Bill of the Constitution, the Union Territory Amendment Bill, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Amendment Bill. The first two bills directly address removal, while the third bill, although focused on Jammu and Kashmir, provides for the removal of the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The 130th Amendment Bill proposes amendments to Articles 75, 164, and 239AA of the Constitution to establish a legal framework for the removal of key officials, including the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, State Ministers, and the Chief Minister of Delhi. According to the bill, if an official remains in custody for 30 consecutive days on a serious charge with a minimum jail term of 5 years, they must step down within 31 days.

Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized the bill, stating that it marks the end of India’s federal structure and democracy. She drew parallels with the Special Intensive Amendment (SIR), which limited voter rights, and Hitler’s one-sided oppression. The Chief Minister argued that the bill aims to undermine the independence of the Indian judiciary.
